This is what integrity sounds like

According to media reports despite Modi’s landslide win in the Indian elections Rahul Gandhi, whose party did badly, has shown good sense and grace in defeat. Whatever one may think about how he conducted his campaign and what was said during it, Rahul in post-elections mode has thrown no tantrums, shown no vindictiveness, projected no sense of entitlement nor arrogance; instead he displays accountability.

“The leader [Rahul], who has been much criticised by the BJP over ‘dynastic politics’, also had tough words for party leaders, who he said, ‘pushed’ for their sons’ candidature, sources said.

Rahul Gandhi had spoken up during a four-hour post-mortem when his trusted adviser…spoke about the need to build and strengthen the local leadership in the party. Though Mr Gandhi did not name anyone, several leaders had their sons and daughters fielded this time, strengthening the voters’ perception about the Congress being a dynastic party.

…On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi took ’100 per cent’ responsibility for the party’s failure and told the Congress Working Committee — which comprises 52 members — that he would like to exit as its top boss.

Mr Gandhi reportedly made it clear…that he would not budge on his decision. ‘It is not necessary that the president [of Congress Party] should be from [the] Gandhi family,’ sources quoted him as saying. When Priyanka Gandhi’s name came up as an alternative, Mr Gandhi reportedly said: ‘Don’t drag my sister into it.’”

Not only does he realise the danger of dynastic politics (albeit a little too late), he shows courage in finally standing up against it, and protecting his sister (as opposed to those who help create nasty family feuds).

In Singapore whatever honour there was left in politics has given way to expediency, ruthlessness, and viciousness (not to mention doublespeak) by the ruling class. We have ruling class politicians who seem (in some cases build, attitude, tone, and diction) like Orwell’s Squealer from “Animal Farm”.

In the alternate reality of Singapore politics: Fake News perpetrators, echo chambers and strident justifications are always applied to those who challenge members of the ruling class, and never to themselves.

Notwithstanding attempts to deflect the light of truth upon their dark auras in the 21st century, the ruling class’s bringing-to-life of so many aspects of Orwell’s dire warnings have made them place Singapore permanently on the literary map of the world.

We will be studied in the future and assigned as a set text in electives, modules, and exams for years thereafter.

Now that’s some achievement.

Democracy is not merely a form of government. It is primarily a mode of associated living, of conjoint communicated experience. It is essentially an attitude of Respect and Reverence towards Fellowmen… Political democracy cannot last unless there lies at the base of it social democracy. What does Social Democracy mean? It means a way of life which recognizes Liberty, Equality and Fraternity as the principles of life.

Clearly there is a problem here trying to equate dynastic politics with democracy.

There is dynastic politics everywhere – in monarchies, democracies and communist dictatorships. So what? People from some families are more attuned to certain professions – and politics is just another profession.

The power in real democracies is with the voters – so it is understood that if the candidate does not meet the people’s criteria – regardless of whose dynasty is featured – then the person will not be chosen. As with Rahul Gandhi. Sometimes dynasties do very well and the people vote them in – like the Kennedy family.

Again – what has democracy got to do with dynasties? Nothing.

However in communist dictatorships family politics is very usual as trust exists only in certain blood relations. So regardless of external appearances when family members that get voted in time and again – even though the candidates are useless – is a clear sign of despotism.

It is not a case of dynastic families not being fit for the position, but of the system not being democratic in the first place to keep clowns in power.
