Uncaring Doctor In Hougang Polyclinic

I am sick and ill. About 9 months ago, Tan Tock Seng Thyroid Specialist told me that my thyroid condition has stabilised and had then transferred me to Hougang Polyclinic to collect my 6 months’ worth of daily thyroxine. He told me that Hougang Polyclinic would call me with the arrangement which they did.

6 months passed, I had forgotten about it and received no reminder from the clinic and I reasoned myself that Polyclinic do not provide the service of phone message reminders. Since I had spare dosage from TTS hospital, I am still alright with it. But it soon ran out and I made same day appointment with Hougang Polyclinic to collect my 6 months’ worth of dosage.

Waited for almost an hour, despite appointment made. So, my turn came and I relate my situation to the doctor [100ug / 75ug etc]. He told me that it had been a very long time that I have not done my blood test. I replied him that I’ve done that in Tan Tock Seng hospital based on 6 monthly intervals, so it cannot be too long. To which he insisted that I must do my blood test. I thought blood test should be 1 week prior to consultant and I told him TTS specialist told me my condition had stabilised and I can just collect my medication from Polyclinic. I also wanted to save money as blood testing is not free. I then requested him to issue me with the 6 months dosage and I will do the blood test in the next visit. I told him if I need to do blood tests and all that, I might as well stay with the specialist in TTS and not come to PolyClinic. I have my doubt as there are no specialist in Polyclinic.

Furthermore, I don’t want to be paying for the “types” of unnecessary blood tests as it can be very cumulatively expensive especially those asked from non-specialist. For those that had done blood testing, they can understand what I am saying. Anyway 6 months isn’t that long away.

However, he gave me that take it or leave it attitude and said I can leave, he is not going to prescribed my needed medication. Before I left, I reminded him again that I am out of medication. He again gave me that dis-interested take it or leave it attitude, ignoring me entirely and continue to watch his screen. I ask him for his name and he said is on the door.

I am entirely saddened with the states of affair in Singapore and the very unprofessional and uncaring doctor we have here. I want to say, whatever reasons he may want to dilute the situation and reasons for his excuse, with overdoes or under does scares, whatsoever, it’s definitely better than ZERO dose at the patient expense at which I am now subjected to.

Right now, my body will be weakened every day, depleted and deprived of the medication that I most needed. I hate TTS for transferring me to the Clinic. There is nowhere to turn to now except to raise this up in TR Emeritus to seek for help. I didn’t know that I would be extorted to do things against my will and be punished for it especially I am sick and ill.

That day on 14th August 2019, my queue number was 3452. The doctor name is Dr Ding ** ***. This doctor should be investigated, seriously speaking. Lack of understanding, Lack of care, Lack of patience and entirely Unprofessional. I charge that with his irresponsible action to refuse to dispense with the needed medication, he is knowingly causing my bodily harm.

It brings really bad name to the medical profession.

Deprived and Very Sad in Singapore.

Mate! Take a bus (170X, 160) over to JB & visit the pharmacy over there. You can buy your prescription drugs without any need for a doctor’s prescription. Just bring along your drug packaging for the Pharmacist.

Dunno why the S’pore health system so screwed up, so much red-tape, so many procedures & protocols with their polyclinic system. I find it so strange! Everything in S’pore is strange – so much restrictions, so many rules & protocols. I called it constipation!

Even their pharmaceutical subsidy isn’t a subsidy at all after you consider the M’sian price compared with Polyclinic price. Even if you pay a little more but no questions asked unlike in S’pore.

And you get better quality drugs over the generic types dispensed by the Polyclinic system.

Think out of the box! Don’t suffer under the PAP mechanism!

  • Harder Truths:

This is a bullshit article. I go to polyclinics and SGH for many years – the staff are really good and always try their best to serve you. I have to wait a long time it is true – but that is because of the bullshit government not the people at the Poly or SGH.

There are certain processes to be followed. Blood and other samples are necessary – you can always arrange for alternative locations (which I have done). Never a problem since the records are online. Cost of the tests are paid for by Medisave.

If the patient does not do his/her part then the doctor is risking his job and the patient’s health by giving you medicine that may not be needed or worse – may give you other problems.

I wonder what kind of an attitude this Armadillo went to see the doctor with- the doctor does not have to deal with a**holes.

I find this long winded attack on the healthcare people totally false and an insult to the hardworking staff that we are fortunate to have.

  • Dun trust any of them:

    1. Several months ago, the doctor at Sengkang polyclinic said I have kidney damage according to the blood test result. Took another blood test to determine the degree of the damage. I was devasted upon hearing this news resulting me into depression for about 3-4 mths before I took the courage to go for the test. Although I fear the outcome, it took me another 2 mths to visit a different doctor becos I had severe flu (no choice).

According to the result, there was no kidney damage. The doctor should had asked for another test for confirmation instead but he said the result was accurate when asked. Never trust anyone in life including doctors.

    2. 7 yrs ago, I went to the same polyclinic and complained about hard stool, stomach discomfort bloated. I requested for a colonoscopy screening to check whether I had any growth/polyps/tumors in my colon afraid that I might suffer from colon cancer. The doctor refused and later complained to Sengkang clinical director(like overall in charge). He also refused to issue me a referral letter. At 54 yrs old, one should had a screening every 10 yrs becos FOBT (stool test) cannot 100% detect presence of colon cancer. These doctors are sitting on their brains!

At of the day I am paying for it. I dun understand why? Maybe they think they are very smart and patients are at their mercy.

One day I had chest infection and went to a different polyclinic, the doctor issued a referral letter and said that I did the right thing. Despite my complaint to Singhealth, it’s all cover up. My advise: dun waste time complaining. The whole insitution is now hopeless.

They detected that I had Diverticular disease that probably caused me to have a discomfort. Btw none of the SGH nurses or doctors explained to me. I am thankful to internet for the information.

    3. Last year I needed to remove the metal wire on my fracture elbow after 6 mths as advised by the orthopaedic surgeon from KL private hosptial. He did a great job even highly commented by the local specialist consultant. KTPH surgeon consultant gave many reasons to discourage me from removing it as she deemed high risk although cardiologist gave the green light. It’s been 3 mths into visiting her and she gave me another 4 mths to consider surgery reply. That’s ridiculous! all in all 7 mths, by then it would be difficult to full remove the metal wire becos flesh would grow and cover the wire. She is very evil and despite my complaint to KTPH, the reply said that she did the right thing. They took 2 weeks to reply and bythen I told them that I had it removed 2 weeks ago.

    KTPH looked stupid.

That fat clumsy woman consultant must be counselled and it is another cover up. She kept talking and asking for advise from her auntie assistant abt 65 yrs old. Both looked like ‘mother and…

You are making noises because the doctor at HG poly taking over your case from TTSH told you to do a blood test and you do not want to do it. The thingz about wanting to save money, you added in for convenience. It don’t cost a bomb to do a blood test, either in TTSH Specialist clinics and Polyclinics.

You had also told us that you do blood testing at 6 months interval when you were with TTSH. It is 6 months pass and now HG poly is taking over the care of your condition. The doctors at the polyclinic is also seeing you for the first time, what is wrong for them to ask you to do a blood test?

A medical condition can go either way within a 6 months period, even though you were told previously that it had stabilized. If it had improved even further, getting better in some cases dosage can be reduced. It can also deteriorate and the doctor need ‘increase’ the dosage. A BLOOD TEST will determine your condition. The doctor in HG is not wrong.

You get irritated easily, to a point you argue over everything and to a point where in this scenario you do not heed a doctor’s advice to do a blood test, etc? Tell your doctor about next time!

S’poreans go to JB to buy medicine directly, cos no need to go through polyclinic process of appointment dates, long waiting lines, blood, urine tests, then reappointment to see doctor for prescription medication, then waiting again in pharmacy to get drugs. Short cut all the way! No need for such a convoluted process! You not only waste 1 set of test fees, 1 consultation charge + the cost of drugs but also waste a lot of time waiting. • KNN:

The HG Poly doctor followed the correct protocol. Overdose or elevated thyroxine levels can be dangerous e.g. affects heart, weak / easily broken bones etc.

Both TTSH & HG Poly are under National Healthcare Group, and are using same inter-connected medical online system.

If you had really done your 6-monthly blood tests at TTSH, then doctors / nurses at HG Poly will definitely know — because they have full access to all your tests & procedures at TTSH via the common Electronic Medical Records system. They will know which dates you had all the various tests and the results.

Reminders are also automatic via system-generated SMS’s. Standard protocol is at least 2 reminder SMS’s. The system log can be checked to see whether the reminder SMS’s are sent or not.

The likely issue is that the last blood test was done more than 6 months ago, and the Dr need to have current blood thyroxine levels to confirm the dosage to prescribe.

Nobody wants to lose their job or lose their bonus for not following critical SOP. Anything to do with medications & drugs are critical. You do NS you should know the consequences right?!?

The only issue I see (if this story is true) is that the doctor lacks bedside manners. But in Singapore (and most other countries), being an asshole is not illegal and usually won’t affect your job.

If you really think there’s misconduct, you can write email to S’pore Medical Council. But I suspect the above scenario is what really happened.

    Medical records are linked:
I wonder why Polyclinic cannot have access to TTS data.

    Can anyone comment?

The database is linked, usually the doctor can view the information. Even if the assess is not there, getting patient consent is very easy and the permission can be granted on the spot. This is one of the very purpose of the shared database, to reduce unnecessary diagnosis, to make more information available to prevent misdiagnosis.

Either the doctor is new or couldn’t bother. If a proper system is in placed, the actions of the doctor will be make accountable, whether proper medical actions taken or not. This feedback loop is obviously not there or not effective. The directions and diagnosis of previous doctors are clearly available in the system. Putting things into the system means there is a trail, one could assume only good or experienced doctors are proficient or confident enough to stand up to their own medical diagnosis and what they prescribed.
Sometimes inexperienced doctors just want to protect themselves by being pedant.
Do less can mean fewer potential mistakes to account for.

The influx of inexperienced foreign trained doctors in polyclinics is now very visible. Are they truly qualified, no one knows.

  • A Care-Less Society:

You are like a fool to make so much conjectures into someone else misery. Let me explain.

Apparently the doctor $30 is not his $30. Your bomb is not his bomb. Why someone wanted to save his money, it is for his reason and rights to do so. No one else should conjectures into someone else misery. He did say he will do it in next visit. Furthermore blood tests may be more than double or triple the normal cost. No one knows except the poor guy knowing how much it would cost him. So don’t be an idiot to assume and wrongly conjectures into someone else misery. It don’t cost much is not for you to say.

No one should be forced to do things or tests beyond his means or against his will.

The doctor conduct is not acceptable, resulting in knowingly hurting the patient health.

The doctor should be understanding, whether you think he added “saving” or was in his mind, which substantiated that the doctor was unprofessional. Do you want a caring society or a ruthless one?

Regarding irritation, I think you meant the doctor is easily irritated and as the conduct has shown hurting the patient knowingly, what else anyone can see from it?

    I agree the matter should be investigated;

    1. Can any doctor force patient to do tests or chase patient out?

    2. Can any doctor refuse to issue medicine recommended by the specialist?

    3. Can a doctor knowingly hurt a patient health?

    4. Should the clinic recall back the patient and improve the society into a more CARING SOCIETY for everyone.

    5. Should the doctor patiently find out the patient reasons for delayed test.?

  • Was thinking:

My previous understanding from Polyclinic is that Thyroid medicine is not something to be taken lightly. The doctor wanted to do a blood test is probably to ensure himself that there is no fluctuation in your system before prescribing the medicine, and even more crucial when you are overdue from collecting your drug as advised by TTS.

Usually, patient after being discharged from hospital, should follow advice, given carefully, as to when to collect your medication and adhere to the next appointment schedule. Never ignore or treat such advice lightly, because human body complexity changes regularly depending on diet and other factors. Medicinces will have to change accordingly as a precautionary measure.

If in doubt with depleting medicines, patient should quickly bring forward the routine appointment with hospital. I am certain there will be another round of blood test issued by the hospital before replenishing the medicine. Quarreling with your family doctor is the last thing you want to do. No point saving SGD30 at the expenses of health and than rant about the doctor for not doing his job. As such, I do not know whether to pity the writer or the doctor.

    2. Regarding you guys painting him as a difficult patient. Well if in the court, the list of TTS specialists would have to attest or debunk his character rather than from 1 doctor alone. If you are out of prescription medication and the doctor refuse to release, how should you behave? But from his text, he is more composed than you did.

3 Whatever, knowingly harming a patient health is totally unacceptable regardless of how you want to defend. The question is can a doctor compel against a patient will and deny him his medication? A subject in which the medical professional in Singapore should take it up.

Polyclinic Doctors are not Gods! And Polyclinics have a hidden agenda to make you go through various tests (like a trained puppy jumping through hoops) just to get your medication. This process eats up your Medisave balance relatively quickly. And you don’t need 6 month interval checks when 1 year is the norm. The Polyclinic system is frankly, a waste of waiting time & a lousy medical service. Best to avoid it if you can! Educate yourself in health matters & eat healthily is the best form of Preventive Medicine!

Besides, I don’t like the Polyclinic prescription drugs that they give you. Most are generic drugs that are long out of patent protection (ie. Not state of the art medication). A lot are sourced from 3rd world Pharmaceutical factories like India, etc. The M’sian pharmacies are doing a roaring business with “smart” S’poreans who go there for their prescription supplies. They carry better prescription drugs from the well-known Pharmaceutical laboratories with a better selection & choices.

I feel sorry for you mentally trapped under the PAP mechanism of Mushroom politics ie. keep you under darkness & uninformed. You are the one that is blind, not Amarillo! At least, he is smart enough to seek help within TRE! If he listens to you, I think he would have lost his faith in mankind!

we have 5 docs in the family. so we speak with some substance. life in public hospitals is cheap labour. 1st year is the worst, the HO year. Hardly time to even eat or pass urine.

many who aspire to specialist training endure the long hours hoping sooner or later to exit and have a better balanced life. many also resign as soon as bond period is over.

and the way the bookings are done cause problems. 15 mins per patient. but if one or more patients take more than 15 mins, such as an unscheduled injection or further examinations, everyone thereafter is affected.

long story short. perhaps. too few doctors per day taking care of too many sick citizens per day. the pap Lj gan kim yong is NOT the right person for the job since nothing has improved under pap Lj gan kim yong. and pap Lj gan kim yong is paid S$m under pap ownself pay ownself S$m system. WTF.

    1. So what and why did the doctor didn’t explain to him? Judging from his text, the doctor seems to be mute and short. And so, why do you need to explain so much more now as if you are the doctor in hysterical now?

Please do not mock your own Singaporean. Someday, you may need the same support from them.

older people many undergo a change in the way they behave. many are easily irritated by the slightest things and get into fights and arguments. those who do not have this self awareness often get into trouble. get into fights and some with fatal outcome. asking him the question and suggesting a discussion with a doctor was a good intention to raise awareness.

advising him to go back to see the doctor is mocking him?

    Was thinking:

It is no wonder someone above called you as like a fool, which I agree 100%. You are making wild guesses and mocking at this poor chap!

    You see;

Are you suggesting that the doctor is intolerant and unprofessional to even tackle an old man with a natural behavior to be easily irritated due to age, which is beyond his ability to control?

As such, how to be a doctor like that, to even harm the poor handicapped old man, my God? Therefore you must have silently agreed that the doctor may be at fault, right? Oh, I see.

But conversely I think the man is a mild mannered gentleman, quietly and silently suffered the abuse, walked away to seek for help from TRE.

You see, If he will to enjoy “old man” discount, it would have been easier for him to just do it, right? So, I reasoned that he may not be that old after all.

Alternatively we can say that the doctor is lucky in a way, not to have met up with a young brag or lad like 3H, otherwise surely won’t be silent or easy for the doctor.

Do you know why he is not taking your advise? You read this reply again. How to go back to wolves den, you say?

    KNN:

PS: I used to work in NHG.
