MOM’S figures of Singaporeans in labour force extremely disturbing

Figures released today by MOM on Singapore citizens in the labour force are extremely disturbing.

One statistic stands out above everything else. The MOM reports that “The increase in employment rate of Singapore citizens over the last decade (from 60.0% in June 2009 to 63.6% in June 2019) was driven most consistently by those aged 65 & over. This reflected efforts to raise the employability of older workers.”

This is alarming. The retirement age in Singapore is 62. Yet, the increase in employment rate of Singaporeans over the last decade was driven most consistently by those aged 65 & over.

There many questions that MOM must answer:

Why can’t our elderly retire in comfort and security? Is it because they have insufficient income for retirement and therefore must continue to work to survive?

If so, is it because their CPF savings are withheld under the Retirement Sum Scheme?

What are our elderly Singaporeans working as? PMETs? Cleaners? Security guards? Petrol pump attendants? Grab drivers? Will the MOM give a breakdown of these numbers?

How old are the oldest workers? Will the MOM tell us the age groups of these workers (eg 65-75, 75-85, 85 and above)?

One would have hoped that the employment rate among Singaporeans would have been driven primarily by younger workers or, at least, those before the retirement age. Is it good that an economy has the increase in the employment rate driven by those aged 65 & older over the last 10 years?

Our elderly should be relaxing, imparting wisdom and values to grandchildren and enjoying their twilight years after having worked all their lives and helped build the economy. But instead they find themselves unable to retire.

The MOM says that this finding “reflected efforts to raise the employability of older workers.” Is this the case or is it because our elderly have no choice but to continue to work to survive?

MOM also reported that the number and share of PMETs among employed Singapore citizens have increased steadily from 2009 to 2019.

There are many accounts of PMETs who are underemployed. There are also those who have been retrenched and find themselves taking on jobs that they are over-qualified for like driving Grab cars. The MOM’s figure does not capture the problem of underemployment among PMETs.

A comprehensive approach to our people and the economy embracing alternative voices and listening to the people of Singapore is critical.

Employment rate or Employment numbers? You mean those social enterprise hawker centres temporary day jobs, or what the rates apply for?

Such numbers are easy to generate for propaganda broadsheets but failed to mask the problems of why 210,000 population growth and only 60,000 new jobs created over the 2015 to 2018 period.

    Common sense says, many are displaced from jobs;

Why do you think MOM is flooding the market with employment news lately.? Just woken up from sleep or Election coming or Both?

Nevertheless, its All thanks to SDP for doing such a good job.

SDP deserves to be voted into the Parliament to represent Singaporeans.

China-haters might not like this being repeated again & again. But it needs to be said!

China visitors to S’pore often remarked that S’pore elderly working in food courts & in menial jobs are a strange sight for them. In China, their elders often gather in parks to socialise & interact with one another. They are in blissful retirement & are living their old age with dignity.

The various International rankings & GDP Statistics regarding S’pore’s wealth seemed odd when we noticed the relatively low salaries on offer, the lousy type of jobs available & the huge numbers of foreigners in S’pore’s Economy competing for jobs.

But 70% voters ask for it. They think the govt is doing a good job. Whose to blame? Anyway, they deserved to suffer their own fate until the cows come home.

You see, all that nonsense about looking after Singaporeans is just that. Nonsense.

Why should a person upon reaching 62 be subjected to things like a yearly contract, supervisor’s recommendation whether to award him/her the contract, yearly health check ups and so on?

If you want to get rid of them just do it. Why have all these nonsense set up to get rid of them, it’s like saying people upon reaching 62 will definitely have a whole host of problems which will impede their work.

Screw the PAP in the next election, they need another good wakeup call since they have forgotten 2011 already.

First & foremost is to re-examine the Minimum Monthly Payout (MMP) for those retirees who reach CPF drawdown age of 65 to have a minimum living standard as recommended by lkyspp which have documented their research (https://lkyspp.nus.edu.sg/gia/amp/article/research-spotlight-series-how-much-does-a-singapore-household-need-for-a-basic-standard-of-living)

For the MOM minister to just change the age of payout from 95 years old to 90yo is unwise; she is simply changing for the sake of coming GE!

SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE FIX IT TILL AGE 90. SHE SHOULD STATE THE MMP & THEN ALLOW THE OPTION TO DRAWDOWN TILL AGE 80 ETC, IF THE MMP WORKS OUT TO BE AT LEAST $1,379 FOR A SINGLE ELDERLY WHICH IS DOCUMENTED IN THE LKYSPP RESEARCH PAPER!

Whether “the oppos would do a WORSE job than the PAPies” or not, I don’t have a crystal ball. Yet given the economic management that I see at moment, I don’t they can do much worse. Even Tan Cheng Bock’s party seemed like a breath of fresh air compared to over 50 years of breathing the same stale air.

Everything is relative, the economic managers of S’pore economy may pat themselves on the back for a job well done (GDP Growth) & reward themselves (high pay, performance bonuses, etc).

But when we go around the region, we realised there is a sense of being “cheated” out of our entitlements when we see our neighbours enjoyed a far better quality of prosperity, a higher growth rate than us & a more vibrant economy with lower cost of living eco-system to irritate our sensibilities. We’re being fooled!

Whether you may agree or disagree with me on this point doesn’t bother me. It is for the 70% voters to think over. It is after all, their funeral!

Although we may disagree, as long as our heart beats for S’pore & not for the political nonsense that we’re seeing – we’re aligned on that part.

What and or how has ANY of those from the People Progress Party shown themselves? All I can say is that they need NOT be in a position of office holder to actually show that in their lifetime they have criticised or made constructive suggestions on national policies before these turned out to be disasters or failures. Take for example the management of our reserves where DPM & Finance Minister Heng Swee Kiat has said that quite a significant amount is being used to fund govt. expenditure, otherwise the GST would have to be raised to some thing like 15%.

Tan See Jay is supposed to work in the fund management industry………..I did not see him criticise the appointment of Ho Ching ……take ENV & Water Resources Minister Masagos talked about NEA imposing higher efficiency std for chilled water supply for air-conditioning……..something which a little company I worked for had been trying NEA to impose about 30 (yes THIRTY YEARS) ago and even refit RELC’s aircon for FREE to be paid back half its electricity bill to the co. over a certain no. of years……..if there is no savings, RELC need NOT pay…………

I would just repeat that the so-called oppos have not shown themselves capable of understanding the ROOT CAUSE of the problems for many PMETs and the lower wage workers are suffering with their CPF monies being effectively expropriated. (You might like to know that I had more than 15 years ago on the Delphi sammyboy kopitiam forum talked about this expropriation). 2. Migrate overseas & become a citizen there. Maybe the politics is more even-keeled & participation is more equalitarian (no cronyism, old boys network, etc).

Other than that, don’t frustrate yourself with the poor quality of opposition in S’pore. And the entrenched position of the S’pore govt. The mechanism had been imposed by one Lee Kuan Yew & he had made no concessions for people to get out of his rigid system. His system: Absolute power akin to that of an Anaconda’s powerful constrictor grip.

From top (Meritocracy) to bottom (the poorly educated masses), the S’pore mechanism from the cradle to the grave were severely flawed from education to work practice (slavery, obedience with no creativity), from CPF to Infrastructural Spending (retirement funds withheld) and so on.

The only way out is total systemic failure & a full reboot! But by then, is S’pore worth saving?
