Singapore may register first death from Covid-19 infection?

With 8 confirmed Covid-19 patients in intensive care, health authorities (MOH) in Singapore have warned the public to be prepared for people to “succumb to the infection”.

At a press conference on Wednesday (12 Feb), Minister for Health Gan Kim Yong said that although healthcare workers would provide the 8 patients in the intensive care unit with “the best care possible”, Singapore should prepare for the worst.

While most infected patients will recover, some may become seriously ill and a small number may succumb to the infection ultimately.

Currently, Hong Kong and the Philippines are the only places outside mainland China to have registered a death, with one in each.

The MOH also announced 3 additional cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 50.

Of the 3 new cases, one is a 62-year-old male employee of DBS Bank. About 300 staff was evacuated from the bank’s premises at MBFC Tower 3 after the infection was confirmed.

The remaining 2 are Singaporeans working at Grace Assembly of God churches in Tanglin and Bukit Batok, one is 34 and reported the onset of symptoms on February 1 and, after seeking treatment at four general practitioners, he went to the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) on February 10. He was confirmed infected on February 11.

The other is 46 and reported symptoms on February 3 and sought treatment at a GP. On February 8, he went to the Emergency Department at the National University Hospital (NUH) but was discharged on the same day. On February 10, he was admitted to NUH. Test results for COVID-19 on February 11 showed that he was infected with the virus.. MOH said they represent the fifth infection cluster on the island city.

Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong said at the press conference that authorities are aware the virus is spreading within the population and are doing their best to contain its spread through contact tracing.

That work is proceeding and we’re going all out to try and contain and isolate these clusters each time we see it forming… Still, the containment measures are not foolproof.

Minister Wong said many people have asked how the situation would unfold in coming days.

The honest answer is: it is still too early to tell. We really can’t say whether it will get better, whether it will get worse, what sort of situation is going to unfold.

We don’t know how successful we will be in all of these containment measures that we have put in place. We will do our very best, but if there’s a need then we may very well have to step up and [introduce] more measures, additional measures that involve social distancing in order to try and reduce the chance of the virus spreading faster.

On Tuesday (11 Feb), Singapore and Malaysia announced a joint working group to control the spread of the virus since there is a high volume of travel between the 2 countries.

Minister Gan also urged Singaporeans to rally around healthcare workers amid reports that doctors and nurses were being shunned.

Let us come together to show our support for them, and to support their work, so they continue to take care of our patients, and families and our loved ones.

Show them the well-deserved support they need. Sometimes, a kind word or a warm greeting will go a long way to make them feel appreciated, and give them a morale boost to continue the fight.

The minister also addressed the panic buying over the weekend, where public swept essential items off supermarket shelves after the country raised its alert level from yellow to orange, signifying local spread of the virus in contained clusters.

He said it was challenging to get accurate information out.

In today’s world of social media, fear and uncertainty and panic spread a lot faster than the truth, which is boring and nobody wants to share.

As of 12th Feb @ 2359 hours

Singapore is currently the country with the most number of Covid-19 infections outside of China, at 50. Thailand with 33 is placed 2nd while Japan is placed 3rd with 29.

Heh, minister, don’t you know that in Singapore, money is the only support? You know, like ministers getting multi-million salary support?

I said, give nurses and doctors on the front line (not those at the back giving orders and opinions) a weekly top-up of $2,000 each.

    All agree, kee chiu!

Seriously, Singapore is doing it very wrongly.

These leaders “learn” from the SARS experience and “apply” it to COVID-19.

HOWEVER, this new virus behave very differently from SARS. The leaders apply the old learning to this new virus. The outcome is terrible.

e.g.1. their main weapon is still close-contact tracing, but this virus does not require close contact. Fact: there are more and more cases with unknown origins.
(even PAP MP wore mask when she was separated by a closed door from a virus patient. No close contact. No contact at all.)

e.g.2. heavy reliance on temperature checking. HOWEVER, unlike SARS, this virus spreads many days before fever appears. Temperature checking is grossly insufficient.

e.g.3. asking people not to wear masks, even in crowded areas. One virus carrier can spread to many. Fact: a Singapore high class hotel conference became world famous for spreading COVID-19.

Please, stop saying you have learnings from SARS. Imagine SAF saying they have learned from WWII experience on how to fight against planes.

The way these 4G handles the so-called panic-buying has no class. There is no need to take turns one by one come out to TKSS, give assurance. Getting MSM to take pictures of warehouses, write long articles.

There is no need to say a single word when long-queues forming to buy. All the providers need to do is keep replenish stocks to fill up the shelves. Let the consumers buy until they are tired. After a while, consumers will AUTOMATICALLY realize there is no need to stock up at all.

When you have confidence there is enough stock, this is the way. No need to keep talking about assurance. In conclusion, we have a bunch of first-class pay, low-class performance G.

  • @Serious, Sg is doing it wrong

I absolutely agree with your analogy. Their obsession with pinning the blame on contact transmission is unbelievably stupid and naive.

e.g.1. their main weapon is still close-contact tracing, but this virus does not require close contact. Fact: there are more and more cases with unknown origins.

There are doctors and nurses and bus conductors reportedly infected and these group of people certainly did not go around hugging everyone they see, right?

Dismissing airborne since its not recognised by WHO yet, droplets is the most likely cause and therefore it is only natural to have mask on especially in crowded place.

I really wonder which idiot came up with the “no need wear mask” BS especially in such a crowded place in Singapore.

Thousands of infections have been confirmed via droplets and these idiots are still thinking that one can get infected only when someone spit in your face? lol

e.g.2. heavy reliance on temperature checking. HOWEVER, unlike SARS, this virus spreads many days before fever appears. Temperature checking is grossly insufficient.

The 2 relapsed Japanese case also confirmed that fever is not necessary to show infection and research has also shown only 50% of infected shows fever.

The 2 Japs were I believe via CT and temp and see what happened? Virus came back.

e.g.3. asking people not to wear masks, even in crowded areas. One virus carrier can spread to many. Fact: a Singapore high class hotel conference became world famous for spreading COVID-19.

Must remember also that it can also travel by touch, so in MRT, Bus, anyone can get infected because everyone will be brushing against each other.

While contact have been acknowledged by them, I am still very confused as to why dirt cheap mask they did not advise.

The one reason I can reasonably conclude is that the stocks are simply not enough and are being hoarded by the gahment to reserve for medical workers (bo issue there because it is important that medical workers are adequately protected).

Retailers are businessmen out to make money, so if masks are in extreme demand, you think they stupid don’t stock meh? Reason very simple, either gahment has a hand hoarding the stocks or there is simply no distributor to import from as mask is in demand all over the world.

Which may reasonably explain why the idiots keep saying no need to wear mask, because there is simply no mask available to wear!

    What do you think?

    Very well said, bro.

The one wrong of pap is telling sheep NOT to wear mask unless kenna.

In pap densely populated Singapore, one person can infect whole HDB rental block.

One infected HDB rental block can infect half of Singapore.

3m local born easy to contain. 6.9m aka 3.9m aliens much harder to contain due to over crowding. wait till 10.0m then bao si.

Think! When did SARS happen? Pinky (wearing pink again in the video on COVID-19) also mentioned about N1H1. He says we’ve battled SARS and also N1H1, we are prepared.

But SARS happened in 2003. N1H1 took place in 2009. Those times Pinky’s papa LKY was still alive! He was there to give advice. Even when LKY was unwell, he still can think better than his useless son. Thus, what Pinky failed to tell us is, he has his papa for advice then. But now his papa is gone! The whole group of them are clueless now.

So, the difference between now and when SARS last happened is the great brain and leadership of LKY is now gone! He’s no longer around to lead sg through this epidemic. So how could people not be panicky knowing we’re being led by a group of jiak liao bees who are always ’3 beats slow’ (慢三拍)? Instead of preventing a fire from starting, often have to wait for fire to start before they take action.

    And yet what happened…

  • Very scary now as more cases that were undetectable starts to surface. Testing kits also no use and have tested 5 times also negative. Then suddenly “pop”!

Dr Zhong study also shows standard nucleic acid tests can only detect about 50% of those infected.

There is this thing call Cross Infection (交叉感染), especially more critical for contagious diseases.

And if the medicial clinic or hospital you visited do not have stringent process, procedure and protocol during this time. And do not cater for special “lane”, “section” or “pathway” for suspected cases, then you might be in for one sickness but ended up catching wuhan virus at the clinic or hospital.

If the doctors, nurses or anyone who manage your case have contact with a suspected cases (and later was determined as confirmed case) prior and did not have good procedures and or they have been recycling the use of their gears, your chance of striking a winning ticket will be higher.

    Just that simple.
