The right to govern depends on public opinion

To a very large extent, the right to govern depends on public opinion.

If public opinion is generally favorable towards government policies and the government itself, the government has a mandate to govern. If they are not, the government will be kicked out sooner or later, as power ultimately resides with the people.

Of course, policies that clearly benefit the people will result in favorable public opinions.

However, policies are seldom in alignment with the needs of the people. In fact, they are often in direct contradiction.

For example, the people are angry with the government’s liberal foreign worker policy because it depresses wages and opens up competition for jobs. We don’t have to look further than the reaction to CECA. Yet, the government is hell-bent on it as it is good for business. Not surprisingly, government and business are often in bed together.

The other policies that do not go down well with the people include an ever increasing population, GST increase, electricity rate increase, Medishield Life premium increase, withholding of CPF, depreciating HDB, the list goes on.

With so many unfavorable policies stacked against the people, how then does the government maintain good public opinions and therefore the right to govern?

One word – propaganda.

The purpose of this ST article, “Most Singaporeans remains open to foreigners here: Poll”, is not so much to inform, than to try to shape public opinion.

Depending on how one frames a question, one can slant a response to one’s needs.

For example, the poll asked random Singaporeans how they feel about foreigners, whether it is important to remain open to foreigners and whether it is important to be a regional hub as it brings jobs as well as foreigners.

I would think that most Singaporeans are fine with foreigners, but they have a problem with the overly lax foreign worker policy, which the poll did not ask. As to the second and third question, most would agree that we need to remain open and maintain our hub status, with or without foreigners.

The poll is in fact asking obvious questions but tying the affirmative answers to a favorable opinion of foreigners.

Such propaganda goes on all the time and as always, a skeptical mind is in order.

Of course, the mother-of-all public opinion is that the government is benevolent and that its intention is ultimately noble. Believe that and you will take in all their lies – lock, stock and barrel.

Nowadays, parliaments are full of parliarmen. That’s how they get to cling on to power for as long as they could. Worse still, when the people are suffering from Stockholm syndrome.

  • SEND FOREIGNERS HOME:

Straits Times: Employers may implement temporary wage cuts to save jobs: National Wages Council

Instead of temporary wage cuts, it is simpler to cut wage bill permanently by retrenching foreign workers. Then use the Government incentive scheme to hire Singaporean during the economic downturn. To make it even more attractive elderly Singaporeans (at least over 55 years old). The best is to hire the Pioneer Generation (over 65). WHY??

For a salary of say $6,000 PER MONTH. The Employer’s CPF contribution PER ANNUM is as follows:
    - 55 and below : $12,240
    - above 55 to 60 : $9,360
    - above 60 to 65 : $6,480
    - above 65 : $5,400

As shown above employing elderly Singaporeans makes sense.

The older workers also have more experience which can make the more productive. How about healthcare for older workers? Not to worry, especially for the Pioneer Generation. They have CHAS (20% subsidy) and Pioneer Generation (an ADDITIONAL 50% subsidy) for medical treatment at Government hospitals. Can also employ the elderly on a contract/project basis with annual leave and medical benefits.

  • Even if ...:

Even if the poll is done in an unbiased manner, so what?

Even if the data is unbiased, the interpretation is totally wrong!

20% to 40% of “Singaporeans” are foreigners who took up citizenship. The result is simply ex-foreigners happy with foreigners.

The correct interpretation is that real local Singaporeans are not happy.

  • REACH to get big bonus:

REACH is so creative. They ask
    1) more jobs and more foreigners, or
    2) fewer jobs and fewer foreigners

    Ask Singaporean whether they want
1)more sex with their spouse and more very painful VD, or
2)less sex with their spouse and less painful VD

Then conclude that most Singaporeans prefer less sex with their spouse, or Singaporeans are over-sexed..

    The PAP Government:
The farking PAP still think that Singaporeans are stupid. Just wait for the next election. KNNBCCB

I show you how stupid Singaporeans could be, especially the 61%!

Take GE2020 at Bukit Panjang SMC, 53% voters were stupid enough not to vote in an infectious disease doctor to help in the fight of covid-19 during this pandemic. Instead we are stuck with a task force which only act on hindsight, looking for magic solution and wishing to be able to rewind the clock!

What about East Coast GRC? As if those voters knew about the East Coast Plan! And they never ask!!!

Than Tanjong Pagar GRC still voted in a farmer able to get cotton out from sheep!

    You say stupid or not?

So don’t worry too much, PAP isn’t expected to raise its vote share since there will be more millenials voting in future elections.

They can do all the propaganda they want, not only did the idiot not get the strong mandate he wanted he also lost one more GRC and 4 more monkeys!
