Cheaply employed cheating A***Holes

I’ve avoided talking about doing business with India and Indians in my blog because it’s a highly emotive topic that can spin out of control. My experiences when dealing with Singapore’s complex communal relations are not the ordinary. If you look at certain segment of Singapore’s cyberspace, you’re bound to get the impression that the Indians from India are a group of devious crooks with fake qualifications, looking to displace Singaporeans and to screw them in the process. This has not been my personal experience with the Indian expat community. This was the community that gave an unknown freelancer with no “big agency” experience chances that would otherwise be unimaginable. It will, forever be stuck in my memory that on the one occasion I, as an individual, was allowed to pitch for a government related job was because of an Indian born member of the board of that particular agency fought for me, while the born, bread and prospered Singaporeans dismissed me as “THAT BLOGGER.”

Never the less, I do work to see it from the side of the guys who have had different experiences with our new migrants from the less developed world. Yes, it cannot be easy to slog for a degree and then get rejected from jobs that you believe to be yours and everyone you meet in the HR department happens to be from a particular community.

So, I avoided getting involved in the discussion on the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement or “CECA” for those reasons. However, a few days back, I got involved with a discussion with a couple of friends about India and in that discussion, someone mentioned words of the effect of how people enjoying a good life in India was due to the fact that Singapore was providing it. That got me thinking – are we really that unaware of our geopolitical reality?

If you look at the basics, there’s a lot to commend about Singapore. We’re rich, clean and green. Singapore is safe. Unless you’re exceedingly unlucky and end up on the receiving end of a random psychopath, nothing bad is likely to happen to you. Our relatively rapid rise up the prosperity ladder gave Lee Kuan Yew a second career as the world’s consultant on nation building.

While Singapore and to be fair, the late Mr. Lee got many things right, we need to remember that we are still a very small dot on the scale of things and when it comes to the negotiating table, we actually have very few cards to play with. We’ve gotten this far by playing the few cards we’ve had quite well but fact remains – things are not necessarily in our favour.

This becomes clear when you talk about CECA and our relationship with India. Could we have negotiated a better deal? Sure, we could have, as they always are in hindsight. However, we need to look at how we negotiated given our position.

I know many will argue that India and Indians across the social spectrum (from Bank CEO to construction worker) earn “good” money in Singapore, which they probably would not have earnt back in India. It is also true that Singapore is India’s largest foreign direct investor, having invested some US$15 billion from April to December 2020 and accounting for nearly a third of foreign direct inflows into India as is outlined by the following report: [LINK]

While this may be true, one should not get the impression that India would collapse if Singapore were to remove its investments in India and to stop all Indians in Singapore from remitting money back to India. Sure, many people in India would be less comfortable or may even starve to death. However, if you were to look the larger picture, Foreign Investment actually plays a negligible in India’s overall economy (in 2019 FDI inflows made up 1.8 percent of GDP). By comparison, foreign investment is an integral part of Singapore’s overall economy making up 32 percent of total GDP.

While India has been “waking up” to the value of attracting foreign investment, the Indian economy has been driven primarily on its large domestic market. Singapore by contrast has no viable domestic market to speak of and needs inflows of foreign investment to keep going.

As the following diagram shows, our largest source of inward investment remains Western, specifically Europe and the USA. [LINK]

However, as Donald Trump made very clear, one cannot expect the Western World to guarantee our economic or military security. A small nation like Singapore needs all the friends that it can get.

Then, add to the fact that the newest “geopolitical” bully is China, which has become more “assertive” under President Xi. Given that China is a billion-person market and an increasingly prosperous one, its negotiating position at the geopolitical one is strong (though one can argue that they will make mistakes and overreach).

So, given that our “traditional” friends are unlikely to want to cross swords with China over us in any given hypothetical scenario, we do need to cultivate more friends.

Incidentally, the only nation that has the “mass” to match China is India. Former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbot has said as much: [LINK]

The rough patch in China-Western relations has been a boon for India. If we were to ever pull out of India, the major players on the global stage would step in. While Narendra Modi may have attended Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral, he was also becoming best friends with then Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe.

In crudest terms, we actually need India more than India actually needs us. There are undoubtedly massive problems with and within India, which have only been amplified by Covid. The majority of Indians live in dreadful poverty, there are security issues, environmental issues and so on. However, India remains the most viable option to China and, especially in the last two years increasingly a place that businesses have to be in.

So, what exactly can we offer? Like the Virgin Group, our most promising asset is actually our “brand.” I know of an Indian born entrepreneur, who stated that being known as a “Singapore Company” allowed him to charge more than if he was an “Indian” Company.

Singapore may no longer be “cost-competitive” but we do have a reputation for being reliable and for doing good enough work for the international market. This makes us attractive to the world’s brains. If you think about it, it is a good thing that people want to come here.

Ironically, this is probably our only “real” card in negotiations with admittedly less developed but bigger countries like India. We need to show the world that things like rule of law matter. We need to show that we treat entrepreneurs fairly. Singapore may not have many cards to play but we need to continue playing the few that we have well.

*Although I’ve been based mainly in Singapore for nearly two decades, I’ve had the privilege of being able meet people who have crossed borders and cultures. I’ve befriended ministers and ambassadors and worked on projects involving a former head of state. Yet, at the same time, I’ve had the privilege of befriending migrant labourers and former convicts. All of them have a story to tell. All of them add to the fabric of life. I hope to express the stories that inspire us to create life as it should be.

The real issue about the ceca matter is really not point to any particular race or religion, the real beef with Singaporeans is the NUMBER OF PEOPLE, any people, allow into the country with practically zero control.

That’s the pain in the butt & pocket that Singaporeans are calling out.

If one fine day, that sillier than pink LHL decide to allow in tons of North Korean to take up jobs here, then of course, the arrow will point at the north Koreans.

So get the real issue right.

  • My view:

PMET deserve the government they voted in.
They ignored the plight of the less able and less educated in the past until the same PAP displacement policy hit the PMETs.
Every company or organization in Singapore, private or public, would give a big title like manager to Singaporeans, where possible, so that they can import more foreign PMET. MOM won’t care a damn. That is why we see more and more foreigners in condo, and HDB heartland.
Remember the incineration plant incidents where 2 senior managers and a manager were killed. In the army, we hear of unfortunate incident death of privates, corporals but never a senior officer like Lt Colonel.

tang Li – this is total bullshit. How much did they pay you for this whiteashing? I have dealt with these India Indians (as opposed to pur local bro Indians), ever since they started to stampede their way into our workforce in the 1990′s.

I can tell you straight to your face – you cannot trust them, work with them or give them any kind of opportunity. They are too cunning and backstabbing. Plus they have a caste system among themselves and hate their own kind just because of skin colour, education, wealth etc. etc. etc. In $G they hold events that they bar local Indians from attending – because they are here for themselves.

Remember that Ramesh from JP Morgan? The island is full of chaters like him. They have wormed their way into every government sector and administrative position. Even DBS is being led by one and who do you think he is loyal to?

You have no idea. If people want $g to become another India province then please invite more of them here. But make sure you are willing to take the consequences. Because they will make this island into another Bollywood drama.

We need to import FTs to create good jobs for Singaporeans.
We need to convert foreigners to Singaporeans to convince Singaporeans that.
We need more grateful, aka beholden Singaporeans to vote PAP.
We need foreigners to buy our private properties.
We need to sell government land at higher price to have more surpluses.
We need more people to grow the economy at all cost.

As far as we are concerned – Bottom Line, Singaporeans suffer. We need India more than India need us – Bullshit. Do you know how much profits does Singapore made from India so far in our Investment in India ? It was once reported that DBS made only 2 million Dollars after so many years of investing in India. The same result with other of our investment. That’s why many big foreign companies like supermarkets closed and left India.

Many years ago, I was selling computer systems to big local companies in Singapore. I brought these Indians from India to write the software for the. Upon completion, the clients told me that they did not do a good job and that they have tO pay another $20,000 TO MODIFY THE SOFTWARE. I realized then that these Indians are not the best. The good ones went to work in the USA. I never had these kind of problems from our local software companies.

Can anyone explain why the undeniable level of talent has not brought better results? Only 66 million out of a population of 1.3 billion are in the middle class making just $10 or more per day? With tiny numbers like that, I hope Tang Li wakes up to the incompetence of the Modi government in creating any type of real economic growth. Stop positioning India as though it is the next China. India is decades away from where China is right now and its’ story of success is looking more like a desperate delusion. Indian GDP has been falling for 8 quarters even before the pandemic hit us [Read “The Great Indian Slowdown” by Arvind Subramaniam].

I’m sure this won’t be posted because India’s imperialistic slave trading history is hidden to portray them as some poor country that is the victim of European colonialism. I have always been stunned by the disparity between the individual brilliance of a large number of Indians (such as the many CEOs in the USA) and their longtime dysfunctional country of poor governance, infrastructure and development. What gives?

The extremely whimsical, impetuous and illogical decision making of the current government has exacerbated the effects of the Pandemic – and the dramatic increase in poverty on the streets of India is visible to all who have their eyes open (except the author).

Culture is the characteristics and knowledge of a particular group of people, encompassing language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts.

I believe you are making the classic naive error of confusing “what is moral?” with “what is culture?” It’s almost circular. First, “moral truths” don’t exist – only moral beliefs. Secondly, distinguish between beliefs that people has about how they should live their own lives and beliefs that they feel should be enforced upon others. Is it really all that hard?

Incidentally, Modi’s brand of market capitalism has not produced results any better than its predecessors. To wit: independent estimates of GDP growth for 2016-17 of 6.9% is somewhat lower than the worst year of economic growth under UPA in 2013-14. Further, economic inequality has skyrocketed, and worst, in terms of foreign policy, the larger problem of Chinese expansionism which brought China in collision with several land neighbors and India. It will not do to deal with the Blangadesh, Myammar matter only. In respect of Afghanistan, USA & India’s best laid plans shall collapse if Pakistan is allowed a central role.

The much touted so called “largest democracy” has descended in to a majoritarian mobocracy where the mobs can lynch with impunity the members of minority and radicalized low caste groups merely on the rumor or the suspicion of eating or storing beef. Insightful observations!

About “justice “ in this world largest democracy:

Their legal system is heavily overwhelmed with outstanding cases. A few tens of millions cases are said to be awaiting trial. It would be decades later when any case is trialled and verdict delivered, probably, by the time the victim had gone to see the maker. Meanwhile, the perpetrator could have served in the government and been promoted several times despite having pending criminal charges against him in the high court!

It is also extremely difficult to attempt any venture in this country. There are different rules for different states and sometimes just a simple venture would have to overcome several sets of different rules by different states.

Everyone will definitely wish that this huge country will do well and become prosperous. Another economic power house is definitely welcome!

The natural resources venture I invested in and lost my entire invested sum (delisted) was due largely to incredulous, unfathomable depth, cobweb of corruption and the investing entity was buried under.

Everyone wants a take but after that leaves you in the lurch. In China, you bribe officials BUT THEY GET THE RESULT you asked of their assistance. In India, they take your money, then mocked your stupidity of trusting them.

How can any country progress like that?

No wonder even foreign entity won’t invest in India’s unexplored natural resources sector. The business is not complex but simply explore, discover and extract nature-gifted wealth from the bowel of the earth. But once the wealth is discovered, the investor is as good as buried dead, CORRUPTION TAKES OVER!

India imports, my estimate, at least 90% of its oil and gas needs but when it offer its off-shore exploration acreage on tender two decades ago, not a single significant, even small foreign entity put in a bid.

    No foreign entity came looking!

India will continue to burn coal for its FUTURE power/energy needs AND WILL COMPLETELY MISS THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE RESOLUTION of a green global economy.

They won’t have charging stations everywhere and if there is, it will run on unreliable power supply fired by coal-burning power station (when the rest of the world stop coal mining and exporting). Transport network will grind to a halt.
