Helping the poor during pandemic with peanuts?

(ST, Nov 28) “Broad-based schemes in place to help families in S’pore hit by pandemic: MSF”

“The Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) has said it recognises that the pandemic has affected the lives of many Singaporeans and that those with less resources are affected more.

It said this in response to a large-scale study which found that lower-income families with young children have been hardest hit by the pandemic.

The Government has introduced broad-based support schemes to help families cope with the pandemic’s financial impact and to support the hiring of the local workforce, a ministry spokesman said.

These include the Solidarity Payment where all adult Singaporeans received a one-time payout of $600 and the Jobs Support Scheme, which gives subsidies to companies to cover the wages of their local workers.”

Comment:

“one-time payout of $600″ = $1.64 a day! ($600 divided by 365 days)

“Jobs Support Scheme” – as this is given to the employer – if you are unemployed, you get nothing!

“Households living in one- and two-room Housing Board flats received grocery vouchers” – $100 worth of grocery vouchers!

“The Government also offered more targeted financial aid for those who lost their jobs or saw their income fall substantially during the pandemic through schemes such as the Covid-19 Recovery Grant and the Temporary Relief Fund.

The Covid-19 Recovery Grant lets lower- to middle-income workers who lost their jobs, were placed on no-pay leave or suffered income loss to apply for temporary financial help. Applications for the grant remain open till Dec 31″

Comment:

“Covid-19 Recovery Grant” – Up to $700 per month for 3 months to employees who Unemployed due to retrenchment or involuntary contract termination; or

Placed on involuntary no-pay leave (NPL) for at least 3 consecutive months.

Up to $500 per month for 3 months to Employees who are facing salary loss for at least 3 consecutive months, with an average overall loss of at least 50%

“Temporary Relief Fund” – “The Temporary Relief Fund is a one-off interim assistance scheme to help Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) who have lost their jobs, or a substantial portion of their income due to COVID-19. It is only available in April 2020″ – how much?

“The number of families on ComCare’s Short-To-Medium-Term Assistance (SMTA) rose by about 24 per cent to about 35,700 households in the ministry’s last financial year, which ended in March.

The sums given out under the scheme increased by about 77 per cent to about $183 million in the same period.

The increase in number of families assisted under the scheme reflected the impact of the pandemic, the ministry said.

The spokesman added that the ministry has improved its referral protocols to help ComCare recipients access additional digital support, financial aid and other forms of help.

For example, eligible ComCare beneficiaries will qualify for the Ministry of Education’s (MOE) Financial Assistance Scheme and the subsidised broadband plans under the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s Home Access Scheme without the need for further means-testing or additional supporting documents.”

Comment:

How much on the average per beneficiary?

“The ministry has also been working with its partners in the Charity Food Workgroup to develop a food database and directory, which will be launched next year.

The directory will consolidate a list of food support organisations, allowing the public to search for help based on location or dietary requirements and connect with the relevant organisation.”

  • Harder Truths:

All this will be so unnecessary if we did not have FT or outsourcing. But to the majority peanuts are more important.

    Where’s the $23K promised by a PAP’s MP?

Even if it was given from hand to hand, we should all have received already by now!

How many $600/- has been given out since the start of the pandemic?

It is just human nature that given with one CM, they will expect one meter, or even 10 meters.

  • Appeal to pm lee:

Every yr we give scholarships to foreign students millions $; pm can please cut that by 50% and give that to kids in lower income groups sinkies only,
I read 88% of kids lower income families have tablets only for zoom learning,12 pct don’t, money saved fr cutting scholarships should be given to Singaporean kids,I feel sad to think foreigners get new tablets whilst some of our own do not,
Yr speech about trust bet pap n sporeans is lopsided, sporeans give in to covid measures as medically its for their own good,if you are sick you take medications, common sense, for those who have their own mind n not hv vaccination u hv punitive measures and so they go along,
Sporeans are pragmatists n they do what’s good for them irrespective of pap;;the rest have been brainwashed and browbeaten ,high vac rate not because of trust, its using owns own rationale or being whacked into submission we know what to do 2025

  • Unemployed Living In 5 Room:

I was an ex SAF Officer during my NS days and I lived in a 5 room flat.

I have been retrenched from my civilian job and am now unemployed.

Looking back, I should not have worked hard to be an SAF officer to defend my country, because right now when I need help, the PAP switched off. Really regret serving for the country.
