The Shangri-La dialogue

In view of the recent spat between the Singapore and China Defense Ministers the People’s Republic should offer the real Shangri-La up in the mountains of Yunnan as an alternative site for these annual talks.

Up in the majesty splendor and magic of the real Shangri-La mountains there might be a chance that the triteness jadedness and the “rambunctiousness” referred to by the Singapore Defense Minister might just evaporate into something much more positive.

As it is the dialogue which has gone on for the past two decades is going nowhere according to one of its major participants. Moreover with the constant changes in the international arena the color n the neutrality of the host is increasingly coming into question.

It is time to allow some Winds of Change to waken up the dialogue. Without that the lone wolf in Asean will begin to think that it owns the lair.

The surly manner in which the hosting Defense Minister of Singapore dismisses a pertinent question raised by the Defense Minister of China is reflective of the erosion of civility and neutrality on the part of Singapore. Punching above its weight does not give it the right to dictate the decorum of the meeting. It is time for Asean to collectively think about a possible change of site.

This USD dollar global reserve issue is more complex than simply switching from one currency to another.

Besides the network externalities. I think ppl are confused by the role of money. Classical economics, ballpark, assumed “real economic activities” determined the role of money.

But Keynes and Schumpeter showed clearly that real economic activies are determined by how money is created.

Schumpeter especially, showed in his concept of “creative destruction” that flow of money to “revolutionary” entrepreneurs is the catalyst for innovation as incumbents are holding onto most of the factors of production.

The social-economic ecosystems of BRICs are simply less conducive for such transfer of money to “revolutionary” entrepreneurs. And ontop of that their financial systems are less efficient.

While, it is true most trades – products between BRICs can be de-dollarized, eg China-Russia trade has reduced USD by 50%, the functioning of a “money economy” means real economic activities will be severely handicapped.

Do not forget, Euros was conceived to replace USD as global reserve since 2002. BRICs as a coalition will be more complicating.

The world economic establishment fails to recognizes the nature of its’ energy predicament. Right now the approach is ‘denial and more denial’ that the problem exists. The weak links are the EU credit system and the euro currency hedges against rising fuel prices: both hedges have failed miserably.

The BRIC countries would be fools to hedge their petrol-dollars against the dollar just to allow the western financial industry to work off the liar loans on their balance sheets. Instead they’re working out bilateral trade agreements among themselves to isolate them from the western folly and the disappearing dollar.

What’s really needed is some antitrust action to break up all the big banks that are too big to fail, place limits on leverage, and institution a financial transaction tax to make the industry pay off their own losses on their liar loans. Brazilians, especially, pay close attention to how the political economy structures and forms wealth, revenues, and income. Consequently, Brazil has done one of the world’s best jobs in growing the numbers and income of its middle class.

What the Marxist experiences of Russia, Brazil, and China taught those countries and their highly politicized workers and communities is that the power of the economic current can not be measured by taking the depth of the economic tide.

Yo bro. Interesting as usual (:

The break up of Bretton Woods in simplicity is known as , quote: “Triffin Dilemma” (1960) , in which Triffin articulates two conflicting roles USD had to take.

For one thing, the USD requires an outflow of currency to replenish the foreign reserves in the rest of the world. However, since that in turn leads to trade deficit, the USD is destabilized, which disrupts the stability of the global financial system.

For another, an inflow of USD is also required so as to strengthen its role as the currency to which other countries pegged fixed exchange rates.

The result, as Zhou (2009) points out, becomes “[the monetary authorities] may either fail to adequately meet the demand of a growing global economy for liquidity as they try to ease inflation pressures at home, or create excess liquidity in the global markets by overly stimulating domestic demand.”

In other words, it is difficult for one currency to serve dual purposes – Unquote.

When US bled gold reserves under Bretton Woods, Nixon suspended, then ended the agreement.

During this period, thats when “petrol dollars” came into the lexicon as US was a major imported of oil. However, by 2019 ,US is a nett exporter. Petrol dollars accumulation should shrink.

The US as the facilitator of liquidity through trade deficit is going to be sorely tested as inflation dampens domestic consumption.

Reshoring is ongoing as well. Again, this points to redressing US trade deficit.

Yet, the FED continues to be the bank of last resort for global liquidity. US is still the ecosystem to recycle excess capital. Lets be real, no country wants any other country to be the global currency.

The Europeans tried, BRICs since its conception tried, Soviet Union tried, China tried.

But which other country can realistically fill that role? But for sure overtime USD will be replaced in segments of global economic activities.

If there is a failure of global liquidity and excess capital cannot be recycled. In such a scenario, US can be damaged but not fatal. Russia will still walk.

But for other countries, including China it will be catastrophic.

  • Pitch-forked Sinkies:

    Thank you, bro

Oil. It’s what makes the world go round, and is traded in “petrodollars” aka US dollar which leapt into its international role in 1939. Economic warfare of WW2 caused Britain and France to suspend the free convertibility of their currencies, so suddenly the US dollar was the only freely convertible currency that could be used.

In a single stroke as WW2 started, that ended. The dollar was the only significant unit left to be used. Sure, Swiss money was bankable and convertible, but there was not much of it, and it was isolated physically behind the walls of war. Only the dollar was big and available.

The danger here is of doing to the dollar what Britain and France did to their currencies in 1939. They did it to control foreign exchange as a war measure.

Keynes proposed a central bank at the 1944 Breton Woods Conference that would have been much less subject to U.S. control. He also proposed a truly international currency instead of the dollar. I’ve seen a number of analysts argue that global demand for dollars helps keep the trade deficit high. However, the U.S. seems infatuated with keeping this ‘status quo’, which involves the continued running up of GOVT. debt every single year.

The dynamics of global trade and distance from giant economies are relativistic, meaning influenced by the strength or weakness of other economies. But how does the future look for dollars, US or otherwise, or other prevalent currencies? The answer is simple–follow the money. But don’t try to predict where it’s headed :)

theforgottongeneration: Really? Thought corruption is still pretty high there. See Transparency.org.

    Yep, bro
Governmental corruption was always the norm in Brazil, perhaps best exemplified by the destruction of Petrobras, the national oil company but when Car Wash investigated and exposed the magnitude it became unpalatable. All parties were implicated, since corruption is endemic and systematic in Brazil, yet it was easy for many to express shock and blame the governing Worker’s Party. This party lifted many poor families out of misery through unsustainable grant programs, and presided over years of commodity and credit fueled economic expansion.

The real problem is that corruption continues to exist in all levels of society: from the taxi driver who asks you how much you want him to put on your expense receipt, to the house buyer who colludes with the seller to record a lower price and thus reduce their taxes and fees, yet all will complain about corruption in Brazil. “One hand washes the other,” goes the Brazilian saying, yet somehow with all the washing both keep getting dirtier.

Too much focusing on Brazil’s politics and not on its macroeconomic course. Unlike other crises, Brazil has experienced a significant decline in its GDP, but it does not have a large amount of foreign currency debt so they cannot play with the depreciation of the currency to solve the problems. The economy of Brazil depends to a large extent on commodity exports and China is its main customer, at this moment Brazil finds that this same country is reducing its imports and, therefore, the economy looks strongly affected.

If a country like Brazil with a weak economy can steer GDP growth to decrease income inequality, then why can’t a country like the US with a strong economy decrease income inequality?
