Know your neighbors

Several decades ago, most people know their neighbors. They know their names, occupations and get together to celebrate birthdays, family events and festivals.

Today, most people do not know their neighbors, even those that they lived in the neighborhood for years. They may know the neighbors by face, but probably not their names or occupations.

They also shop in the stores and eat in the restaurants in the neighborhood. They have many opportunities to meet their neighbors in these places.

This change of social habit may be the result of the modern lifestyle and communication.

With cars, many people can shop and eat at places further away. With the mobile phone and social media, they can maintain social contacts and relations with a wider circle of friends outside of their immediate neighbors.

For example, they may meet regularly with friends who share an interest in a sport or hobby, e.g. golf, walking. They may meet the former colleagues regularly for meals.

In this modern setting, iut is still useful for a resident to know their immediate neighbors, especially if they have children of around the same age, or share an interest in similar sports.

It is more convenient to meet a neighbor for coffee, or a chat, or a meal once a month, than to make a similar arrangement with people who live far away.

If it is an advantage to know a few neighbors well, why do the majority of people hardly know their neighbors?

The main reason is the lack of time. Most families have both spouses who work on a job far from their home. They hardly have time to meet and talk to their neighbors. The years can pass by very quickly.

I have an idea to make it easy and possible for people who want to know their neighbors to make contacts with each other. They can register in a website and view the particulars, e.g. name, telephone number, occupation, of other people who live nearby.

This website allows any person to post an activity and their neighbors to join, if they are free. For example, it can be a breakfast, a walk or just to meet for a chat.

Many people with free time may want to interact regularly with their neighbors. Those who are busy may just register to know their neighbors, but are not required to participate in the activities.

In the case of an emergency, it is useful to know a few neighbors who may be able to come and lend a hand.

I wonder if many people will be interested to join this app?

“ if you know each other well, tolerance level will be higher, interactions will be smoother and more cordial “

A very good suggestion. It should be seriously looked at with a view to make the society better.

Knowing your neighbor is good, but it is better not to get close to them.

    1. Neighbors are mostly selfish and will try to bully you.

Your neighbor will care for themselves and throw rubbish near your front door.

    2. Most neighbors mostly like to look down on you.
Most neighbors thought they were better or richer than you, not knowing that they lived on the same block.

    3. Most are self-centered and very arrogant
most neighbors are very arrogant as they try to belittle you or your children

    4. Most behavior is like a thief.
Neighbors will steal your bicycle, or your flower pots, soil, etc, right in front of your doorstep, at midnight.

5.If your neighbor is a foreigner, they act as if they are more clever or richer than you and look down on you.

So the best is to keep to yourself and don’t get too close to them.
    They are mostly hypocrites

Decades ago, children usually went to neighborhood schools. They made friends and played together and knew each other. Fast forward, today children in the HDB heartlands go to schools that are not in the neighborhood. Some are not in the neighborhood. They do not play together as they will all have activities in their schools. Both parents work, as such almost everyone is away from the neighborhood except during the weekends which becomes family time. As more new citizens and PRs whose values and behaviour might differ from us move into the HDB heartlands, people will keep more and more to themselves. I used to use the exercise machines in my neighborhood until I saw a man sunning his mattress on them.I have not used the machines since then as I do not know if mites or bedbugs might be on them.I have intentionally left out the race of the man. Now do I want my contact details on a website to share with these kind of neighbours? I would be worried that my privacy will be invaded. Mr.Tan, Singapore is not as it was in the past. We have lost our roots and our heritage. It has been stolen from us by a govt. that is unable to comprehend cause and effect. It also never changes its policies.

Ah neh FTs and angmohs are the most how lian neighbours.
They think they are above Singapore Laws.
I sincerely hope The SPF and other agencies uphold our LAWS N NORMS with true integrity and with fairness pertaining to offences committed by angmohs in particular as i notice angmohs here seem to get away from being punished duly when they commit crimes ,break the law, etc.

The point we,sgs, miss is that MSM likes to highlight a few rare incidents of good angmohs ,eg,but plays down the average conduct generally.
Yes,i must agree there are a few occasions where angmohs show good examples like that family(mother n kids) who went around in Geylang area picking up litters with their tongs. But,that is a rare breed of angmohs living here.
    Most are not this kind.
The same it is for GRA$$ROOTERS who constantly paint rosy pictures
after laying the ground spick qnd span for their MPs/ministers’ WALK-ABOUT.

Reality is far from rosy and its harsher than most choose to believe.
    Is this MY COUNTRY anymore?

  • SureDie:

People have SOLD their soul to a society which values “talent”(profit), though it has become washout talent compared to the past, and do not value people in general unless these very tiny number add “value”(something to GAIN from) into their lives.
Furthermore, familiarity and common traits such as culture, race and language help. Hence the more diverse the more divided and the more hatred/resentment even as often heard.
Too much damages have been done to the fabric of society already by the government for people to want to connect with each other or their neighbours anymore because either they have become obnoxious or very insecure(people being too invasive and judgmental due to all kinds of dos and don’t to keep peace – control a very divided population)
