7.8 magnitude earthquake devastates Tibet
January 7th, 2025 | 
Author: A magnitude 7.1 earthquake has hit Tibet, in the region of Shigatse, which is near the border with Nepal.
According to Chinese state media, so far have been killed, with 130 others injured. Many buildings have collapsed in the area.
Powerful tremors were also felt in the Nepalese capital Kathmanduand as far as India.

A U.S. Geological Survey simulation said it is plausible a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Southern California could cause 50 non-ductile concrete buildings to fully or partly collapse, with as many as 7,500 people in them.
“We have many thousands of them throughout California, and many tens of thousands of Californians live and work in these buildings,” said USC earth sciences professor James Dolan, an expert on California’s and Turkey’s fault systems. “We know they’re not going to perform well in earthquakes. It’s not a knowledge gap. We understand what’s going to happen to them when they’re shaken in large earthquakes.”

The quakes caused extensive damages at the affected locations in Tibet, some wasted no time to ridicule the administration governing the region. Those who did that might have overlooked something important.
The affected areas were located at more than 4000 mites above sea level and the natural environment is very unforgiving. The oxygen level is just about 50% that of places at sea levels. The land beneath the surface top soil is permanently frozen. Roads spent few times more resources to build than those built on land located at sea level would just crumble during summer time, when the permafrost lands started to melt. Dwelling houses had to be built in the ways that had been tested or it would not last through summer.state of the art technology today could overcome the problem but require far more resources than they could afford. Difficult terrain also makes the problem multi folds. To resettle the people living there to safer places is a easier solution but met with strong resistance.
