Academic Lam Peng Er put it, do we want an opposition that can “attract in greater numbers and offer a narrative which counters the ruling party’s “hegemonic ideological discourse”? What kind of opposition do we want? Really, what can they offer to us voters? Check and balance? Safeguarding? Keep the ruling party on... 

I like to suggest how to get our local born citizens to accept new citizens. We should expect the new citizens to have the same obligations as local born citizens, especially in the field of national service. But new citizens may be too old to serve national service, or they may not want to be new citizens if they have to suffer... 

It was interesting to watch the Q&A section at the recent Singapore Perspectives 2020 conference, and how DPM Heng Swee Keat tackled these questions.
