Lawrence Wong’s budget speech
I comment as a concerned citizen and a lay person.
I have listened to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong's budget speech online and among the predictable, more or less usual budget allocations, one new subject caught my attention and that is the pap government's push to study and explore the use of nuclear energy.
Nuclear power and energy is one area that very, very few people can claim to know enough or are expert enough to stamp their authority on.
I understand that in the years ahead, given our physical land constraints on one hand and our growing need for clean energy on the other, especially our industrial needs, cost effective and I will put it this way, 'as safe as possible' clean nuclear energy seems to be the best way out.
Apart from learning from other countries that are more advanced with their nuclear energy experiences, scouting the world, getting the best brains and most knowledgeable experts that money can buy to educate, advise and help us with our nuclear aspirations, certain natural factors are also in our favour such as Singapore does not have earthquakes, no tsunamis, no cyclones etc. I remember Fukushima.
At the moment, I only have one question and I believe that it is a fair question.
If in the event of a nuclear accident be it accidental leakage, terrorist drone attack or whatever, what is the possible worst case scenario for us, Singapore?
Given our small land area and our high population density, would half of our population in an instance be exposed to nuclear radiation that would lead to them contracting cancer and more or our little red dot would disappear in the blink of an eye from the world's map etc? Of course the scale and severity of the accident matters much.
Unlike many other people who are ever ready to agree with whatever the pap government says or does or are more inclined to say yes, I say do not get carried away by all the hype, the clever and the seductive arguments for and logical rationalisation without fully, fully satisfied with each and every question answered.
To call it an existential issue or more precisely our collective existential issue is definitely not an exaggeration.

Sincerely and fully agree with Simon this time.
There is this “ small modular reactor “ being considered for metropolitan by countries with little fossil fuels energy. Results are likely to be seen in the near future.
Sinkie land had to go nuclear, small modular reactor is the only meaningful option.

No wonder. Buy Greenland. We will have all the land that we want.
Offer the “natives” $10,000,000 each. Surely they will happily merge with us. If Malaysia offer Sinkies $10,000,000 each, we will merge again.

Nuclear program for SG should be discussed in depth before it can take shape, no matter
how small the scale is. Failing which, any mishap will be catastrophic and the entire nation totally wiped out in an instant. Johor-Riau archipelago will also be at the receiving end.

The spent fuel rods are stored on-site at the power plant. They could not be dumped into a landfill or the sea.
If a leak occurred, the whole island state would be at risk as the radioactive isotopes could get into the air, soil and water supply. There is no preventive jab and no N95 mask for this. Any part of the body could be irreversibly affected which means more ways to die.
Maybe the PAP scholars have already forgotten what they studied in school.

Look at it this way, they can’t even run a proper train system without it breaking down every few months or so and they want to talk about something far, far, more dangerous which can potentially kill?
What if the worse should happen and the reactor melts down ala Fukushima? Are they going to say don’t worry don’t worry the reactor is 1km thick low chance of it happening?
You really can trust this government to believe something will not happen? How far can we evacuate as well?

Nuclear energy may be cheaper than other energy resources, but the payback is unimaginable.
Imagine just 1 mistake in 100 years means not just Singapore but the entire region will be inhabitable forever.
Yes, save & careful for 99 years, but just 1 error, human or otherwise, is deadly.
Anyway, this source of energy may be necessary eventually, like it or not, danger or not.
It is what it is.

Artificial intelligence and its related industries have huge appetite for electricity.
If sinkie land, presently ranked third in the world in AI development, would to continue with meaningful progress in this field, having enough electricity is one of the key factors.
To rely on fossil fuels could hardly satisfy AI appetite for electricity. Green energy could do little to help because of sinkie land size. Going nuclear is the most viable option. The next best thing might be the hydrogen fuel but it is still at its infantile stage of development.
LW is a capable leader. He will assemble team with top most experts to study the feasibility of going nuclear, and later, hydrogen fuel.

When the MIW is blinded by greed, they will dismiss the possibility of this scenario by tagging it as too remote for consideration. Please continue to vote for extinction by supporting the MIW. I feel very sorry for the younger generations but there is a price to pay for the sinkies’ heck-care attitude.

LW is a capable leader? Is there anything different he is doing from LHL? The PAP don’t have individual leaders, there operation mode is the party makes the decision. So it is a group decision. So when they are all cut from the same cloth what is going to be different? They cannot even run an efficient transportation system and they want to go into nuclear energy? Who is going to be in charge?Foreigners again? Why would you trust Foreigners with nuclear energy that can completely wipe you out? Where is the waste of nuclear energy going? Just listening to the West and following doesn’t show leadership.

This is a scientific problem, not a political issue.
There is a nuclear scientific research laboratory ever looked into the problem of nuclear waste produced by all the existing nuclear power plants all over the world.
The result is quite astonishing, a 3-room HDB flat could contain all the nuclear waste produced in a year by the world’s nuclear plant reactors.
For the past thirty years, besides the Fukushima disaster, was there any other nuclear power plant accidents?
Fukushima incident was caused by an extreme powerful earthquakes. Sinkie land is blessed with an earthquake free, natural disaster free platform.
Now, nuclear waste produced by nuclear power plants is no longer a waste, it is still containing a massive amount of usefulness for human to explore.
LW is a truly farsighted and wise leader.
