Many workers fear for their jobs

I read with interest the Straits Times’ Opinion piece “Many workers fear for their jobs – their firms should address this honestly” (September 6).

Firstly, we need to find out why many workers fear for their jobs? I think, there are many reasons for it.

Basically, there are two broad areas, one is the impact of macro economic environment and another aspect is the impact of technology.

The continued sluggishness and instability of the world economy has prompted many companies to take cost-saving measures as the businesses of most companies will more or less be affected.

These cost-saving measures might embrace redesigning and enlargement of job scopes, as well as redeployment and reduction of existing manpower.

Therefore, the concerns of all employees are inevitable and understandable.

Nonetheless, I recommend that those affected employees should be informed and emotionally reassured in advance, as well as being reasonably compensated.

As for those employees who narrowly escaped being laid off, the relevant companies or relevant departments should develop and fund a comprehensive, systematic and effective retraining mechanism or programs (especially the training programs of information technology and AI-related technology) for them to grasp upon it.

By doing so, it will help all current employees re-skill and hone their employability skills.

This will greatly mitigate the impact of technology which cause the loss of their livelihood.

Anyway, Artificial Intelligence is merely one form of technology, and the ability of a machine to display human-like capabilities such as reasoning, learning, planning and creativity.

However, no matter how intelligent the machine is, it can never surpass the abilities of the human brain.

In fact, the main purpose of any inventions is to make people’s life more convenient (technology and information easily accessible and for use), comfortable (in quantity of life), productive (by replacing repetitive manual and hazardous work), interesting (choices of products) and enjoyable (making life relaxing).

In short, any inventions which is without the intention to make any jobs redundant, or to replace anyone’s job or threatening human survival.

Thus, it serves the objectives of saving time, efforts and costs. Similarly, it is for the Artificial Intelligence.

At least 70% of locals are gladly and willingly giving up their jobs and security every election, so that FT can replace them. It is their choice. Let them suffer for it. No issue here. Let’s move on.

    Agreed.
Maybe we should have an unemployment insurance so that it can cover them for 6 months to look for new job or go for training to make them relevance for new jobs with decent pay.
Most of the jobs available in the market for them if retrenched are low end jobs that pay very poorly.

Generally The trainings available are quite poor and expensive (Benefits the training institute to take advantage of the Skill Future funds).Need to improve the standard and really help them to find meaningful jobs.

Oh no, please don’t give the MIW any more $$$-making ideas. Soon, they will mandate that part of our CPF must go to pay premium for unemployment insurance. However, the premiums will be artificially high and designed to suck way more than what the insurance companies pay out. I am for unemployment insurance if the govt paid for it out of its own pockets.

Sorry but the hard truth remains that companies will simply cut headcount when a recession hits to stay afloat. SIA is an excellent example when many of their flight staff were forced to work as safe distancing ambassadors and nurses. Tour bus drivers are in short supply now because a lot of them were let go by their companies during the pandemic so they took up jobs with SBS/Tower/Go Ahead. Now that their former companies need drivers once again it comes as no surprise that few of their former drivers want to rejoin their former companies.

After all, since there is no iron rice bowl nor job security these days for the vast majority of workers why bother staying with any employer unless you have nowhere to go? There is no sych thing as company loyalty anymore and to those companies moaning and whining about not being able to get enough workers ask yourselves this, can you guarantee that your employees won’t be retrenched come a recession? The answer will be NO.

When I was working for a equipment company, the chee bye Sales manager ask his nephew set up a company and direct the sales to his nephew newly setup company. Similar tactic by the greedy/dishonest Chinese who steal our Terrex and SouZhou Park.

    He was caught and sacked.

Yes, we Singaporeans should fear losing our jobs to Chinese who copy, steal technology from others and create their own mobile phone.

Yes, those 70% can only blame themselves and nobody can help them. If the intelligence is so poor, so let their families and they themselves suffer in the near future.

  • When Sinkies went to the polls during the C19, they were fully aware of what they were voting for, so what is the point of crying father and crying mother now?

Come next GE, they will continue to vote for the Party Against People, what will change?

The last election while ineffective was a litmus test of how Sinkies thought of how their country was being run.

70% of Sinkies voted for their owners.

This article is a hoax, because clearly they are happy with their state of slavery.

Tech: Well said. I was actually expecting sizable protest votes, apparently, it was little (if we count void ones). Sinkies are very happy to be enslaved.

The daft ones don’t understand why they are hurting.

When the GST just increased by 1% from 7% to 8%. But their overall expenditure went up by maybe 3%, 5% or more.

When our total population increase by another one or two million, just a little more congested and more competition only right? No, the overall costs in terms of social and economic don’t just increased linearly. It’s an exponential increase conversely the people’s welfare decrease exponentially as well. In economics, it is called the law of diminishing returns (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminishing_returns). Beyond the optimal point, it is an exponential drop….but the daft ones are still clueless even though we have passed the optimal point in labour inputs decades ago.

A bigger and more accurate litmus test in my view is the CoVID vaxx. Here are 95% of the population willingly killing themselves just because the Regime said to do it. With all their ‘education’ it is clear $inkies place no value in their own independence and let the Regime do their thinking for them. Even if it kills them.

The next election will be 75% – 85% won by the Regime. Elections notwithstanding, there is no functioning opposition and there is not expected to be one for the foreseeable future and certainly within our lifetime.
