I refer to The Independent Singapore Feature News, “27yo becomes 1st SG female to complete SAF commando course” (Oct 26) and the OPINION “We need young men, not mummy's boys” (Sep 26).
Foremost, it is pleasant and heart warming to learn that a 27 year female army captain had successfully completed her tough commando course, and this rare case of female hero is admirable and enviable.
As Singapore maintains an active conscription system in accordance with the regulations set by the Government of Singapore, known as National Service (NS). This requires all qualified male Singaporean citizens and second-generation permanent residents who are in the minimum age of 18 to serve a period of active duty military service in the uniformed services.
In view of this mandatory requirement, it is good for all youth males to get themselves psychologically and physically prepared for the NS prior to their enlistment.
This can be duly motivated and prepared or done either going through the school extracurricular activities (such as the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) and Scout Movement uniformed services) or encouraging each “eligible” individual male to do some forms of physical training, such as jogging, weightlifting and swimming.
Within the planned framework structure of the two years NS liability, all the qualified male soldiers have to go through three months programs of Basic Military Training (BMT).
Firstly, as all the Recruits have to learn the fundamental skills and maintenance of the rifle - Singapore Assault Rifle (SAR) 21 as part of their Technical Handling lessons.
Besides, Field Camp is one of the major highlights of BMT, the 24km route march with your full combat load, obstacle course, 2.5 kilometres running test and live-firing test are also amongst the well-structured BMT training programmes.
Anyway, the Basic Training is challenging and meant to push all the male recruits to become the best version of themselves.
Benefits:
1)It will help all the male soldiers develop mentally and physically to overcome things they didn't think possible.
2) Boosting soldiers’ confidence and the ability to make informed decisions
3)Equipping them with advanced knowledge of survival skills like First Aid, navigation, and hand-to-hand combat
After the completion of the basic military training course, all soldiers will be dispatched and deployed to various military units for deepening trainings of special training courses (for the rest of about 19 months NS duration), such as Officer Cadet Training Course, Army Specialist Training, Combat Engineer Course, Explosive Ordnance
Disposal unit).
As we all know, the National Services is a well-planned and well-structured training course and the disciplined program for all qualified Singaporean males to proudly undertake and demonstrate their patriotism in their lives.
Despite all, the qualities of men and women required by the army or military training are strict discipline, close teamwork with cooperation, equipping with responsible attitude and spirit. In due course, no army is exempt.
Anyway, any male aged 18 or above who has successfully completed two years of National Service will generally become a more disciplined, responsible, cooperative and resilient adult.
This will undoubtedly help individuals establish a foothold in society and their employment, as well as start their own families and businesses in the future
Hence, all the Singapore parents need to actively encourage and remind their sons to learn to be independent and resilient in character as well as physically tough while they are still schooling prior they are called up for their army enlistments.
However, we still need to brainstorm and discreetly study whether we could further consolidate all the NS training programs to make it more compact and intensive to cut all the unnecessary waiting time during the various types of military trainings, field camping and live-firing activities.
As if our NS liability duration can be further reduced from two years to one-and-half year ( yet without compromising of its training quality or excellence), it will be significantly great, meaning productive and beneficial for all the stakeholders, such as the NS men, the government and the prospective employers.
It would be precisely because of this “unexpected” move, our country's labor market will grow more rapidly - a recurring batch of labor force in the pipeline of replenishment.

In the 1970s, while in the army camp dutifully providing our service to the very young and very small country, we were occasionally blessed with the privilege of getting very big shots ( those with crabs on their shoulders)from MINDEF to deliver lectures to us, telling us the value of our service to the country.
By now, most of us probably have forgotten the content of the lectures but the phase “ your NS liabilities…….” Is still vivid and lingering in most of our minds!
Upon the completion of our 7th in camp training, we again was told by some big shots that we had completed our reserve liabilities and we might not have the opportunity to see each other again.
But just months later, we were informed that SCDF was just established and the newly established force needed our service. Thus we had to undergo training to be deployed in a “ shelter platoon “ of a unit in the SCDF.
During the training, we asked why we had to do extra?
We were again told that our NS liabilities would not end unless we had reached our 40th birthday!
Many of us took more than 20 years to clear our NS liabilities!
