This is not a game of cardsThis is not a game of cards I can appreciate parties wanting to hold their cards close to their chest, but the smoke and mirrors games on nominations day, the shuffling of the DPM from a seat he had openly been declared to be defending, and other ministers shuffling constituencies leaves one feeling the PAP thinks it is playing a game of cards. Constituency...

Cwc-Ai

Abdul Malik: My past and future – towards a more compassionate Singapore

Abdul Malik: My past and future – towards a more compassionate Singapore

With the conclusion with the Yellow Ribbon Prison run 2010 on 5 Sep 2010 yesterday, I thought it would be a good occasion to reflect on my past mistakes, express my gratitude for the chances given to me presently, and offer a glimpse into my future. In October 2008 when I was still working as a financial planner, I received a sum of $11,500 from 2 separate clients in cash as premiums for their investment-linked policies. As that was a point in time where investors were highly risk-adverse due to the fall of AIG and Lehman Brothers, business for me was hard to come by. Times were hard for me. I was owing $700 in back-payment for my rental room, and more for other things like mobile phone bills. It was this that drove me, in my moment of folly, to pocket the premiums received. After my conviction in the Subordinate Court of Singapore, I was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment. During my incarceration, I spent much time reflecting on my wrongdoing and regret what I had done. The fact that I had stolen from the mouths of others to put food on my table was something that caused me great anguish in my private moments surrounded by those cold, hard walls. During this period, I also had the opportunity to meet many people who did not have the privilege of being brought up in a comfortable home. I come from a upper middle-class family and before my conviction, I had never interacted with people who were less fortunate than me. Being in prison really opened up my eyes to the plights of many inmates, many of whom were there as a result of economic circumstances. That had a lasting image imprinted on my mind. I decided I needed to change my life. I needed to set my life straight once and for all, to redeem myself for my past sins. As my prison term was nearing its end, I was offered assistance by SACA to find a job under the Yellow Ribbon Project. Hearing the stories from other inmates, at first I thought that I was going to get a menial, back-breaking job. Therefore, I prepared myself to build myself up the hard way. Upon my release, I found that SCORE had a few jobs in executive positions, much to my surprise. On the advice of my counsellor, I decided to try for them first. I can truly consider myself lucky, for the first interview I went for resulted in my employer hiring me. To this day, I am still working for him, and the future looks a little brighter now. Now that I am given a second chance, I would like to be more proactive in the Yellow Ribbon Project or any other similar programme that can help rehabilitate and turn people's lives around again. All I wish to do now is to redeem myself, and to be given a chance to make amends. I want to set my life straight and help others do the same too. The images of the less-fortunate forever condemned to a life of misery, still haunts me. They have no way to break out of the cycle of poverty, while I had my one lucky break. I believe that the time has come for me to speak up for them, and the many others just like them in Singapore. I count myself as one of the lucky ones, but there are many others who are not so fortunate. There are many in our society who turn a blind eye to their plight, and are unforgiving towards those who may have made mistakes in their lives. My vision is to make Singaporeans more compassionate and forgiving towards their fellow countrymen, especially those who are ever-willing to change their lives for the better, if only they were given that one chance. My political aspirations are not so different from other Singaporeans. Like them, my sole aim is to provide a better society for all in the future, a society tempered with compassion. I am deeply grateful for my family's support and friends who have stood by me through rain or shine, during this very difficult period. To all my loved ones and friends, I sincerely thank you, I would not have been able to get back on my own two feet this fast, without all of you behind me.   Abdul Malik   EDITOR'S NOTE: The author is an alumnus of Raffles Institution and was arrested on 24 August 2010 by three plain-clothes police officers from Bedok Police Division for a comment he posted on Facebook critical of PAP minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan's handling of the YOG. Read More →

SMS-alerts on election-related news and TR’s plans for the coming election

SMS-alerts on election-related news and TR’s plans for the coming election

The Election Departments will be offering SMS-alerts on election-related news including changes to the electoral boundaries and alerts after Nomination Day. Singaporeans can subscribe to the service on the ecitizen website here. To learn how to sign up for the SMS-alerts, you can read the short PDF guide here. The Temasek Review will be providing daily election news, interviews and political commentaries in the days leading to the next general election and instant updates on the latest happenings during the campaign period and on election day itself. Despite our limited resources, we have proven ourselves to be more than capable of countering the relentless propaganda from the mainstream media during our coverage of the recent Youth Olympic Games with more than 50 articles on the event itself, a feat not achieved even by the Straits Times. With our soaring readership which has already exceeded TODAY Online and is given a further boost by Google News aggregating our articles on a daily basis, we are quietly confident of countering the mainstream media's monopoly on the election news as in previous years. Though our readership is still below the likes of Straits Times and Channel News Asia, we have a few advantages over them: 1. We are able to get our news out faster than any media agency or blog in Singapore and nobody can beat us to that. 2. We can generate a relentless barrage of publicity for a political party which the mainstream media is unable to do so. For example, if you have noticed, we have been publishing daily articles about the Reform Party which has led to an increased number of volunteers helping out at its walkabouts. For propaganda to be effective, it must be constant, consistent and compelling. 3. We are able to obtain scoops and insider information which nobody in Singapore is able to because of our connections and large readership. We need our readers to be our citizen journalists on the ground when the day comes. If you come across any news-worthy stuff, please post it directly on our Facebook here. You can also upload photos directly on our Facebook page here and we will get an article out within half an hour. Alternative political parties in Singapore are most welcome to make use of our site and Facebook to get their news out without going through the biased Singapore media which will surely twist, distort and misquote every single word of yours in order to discredit you and make you look like a bunch of idiots. Here at TR, we promise you that your message will be sent to a largest number of voters within the shortest period of time completely uncensored, unfiltered and unedited (However, this means that you will have to be responsible for your own spelling and grammatical mistakes.) In addition, we will be providing instantaneous updates via our Twitter service here. Please sign up for it if you haven't done so. For readers who are concerned with privacy and security especially with the uncertainties posed by the ruling party and various agencies, do consider signing up for our Secured TemasekVPN, which is specially throttled for access to our site. We may also launch a separate site in due course in case this one crashes under overwhelming traffic. In 2006, we do not have an alternative news site with a readership to rival that of the mainstream media. Today, we have one. To enable us to be more effective, influential please help us share our site with everybody you know to increase our readership base before the election. This is a battle between David and Goliath. The Facebook generation has an once in a lifetime opportunity to create history. Please join us in our quest to tip the unequal playing field in favor of the alternative parties and to reclaim the ownership of our beloved nation.      Read More →
