Singapore has overtaken Malaysia in the number of Covid-19 infections after the Ministry of Health (MOH) announced another daily record high of 942 new cases for Saturday (18 Apr @ 12 pm). With the additional 942 cases, the island city currently has a total of 5992 Covid-19 cases compared to Malaysia's 5305 cases. As it did since 5 days ago, MOH has again released the number of cases as a percentage, which is inaccurate and not reflective of the actual number of cases. As of 12 pm on 18th April: Imported Cases: 0 Linked to known clusters: 79% (744.18) * * The number derived from the percentage (79% of 942 = 744.18) is inaccurate with a possible margin of error of about 9 patients. Note: MOH has removed the stats for unlinked cases related to residents in dormitories in its daily situation report since 17th April, making it almost impossible to accurately calculate the number of linked and unlinked cases in exact numbers. MOH has also changed the format of its daily situation update to merely announcing the total number of new cases and then grouping the figures into 3 meaningless and confusing categories, namely community, dorms-related and non-dorms-related. Cases in the community: 22 (14 SC/PR, 6 Work Passes, 1 Dependant’s Pass, 1 Long-Term Visit Pass) The number of new cases in the community has decreased, from an average of 40 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 31 per day in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has increased slightly, from an average of 19 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 22 per day in the past week. We will continue to monitor the numbers carefully as the circuit breaker period continues. The contact tracing and epidemiology teams are working to identify the source of infection for the unlinked cases, but this will become increasingly difficult as time passes. Our surveillance programme is also ongoing, where a small sample of patients at our primary care facilities are tested for COVID-19 infection. The cases picked up through this surveillance is an indication of the presence of undetected cases in the community. Work Permit holders (residing outside dormitories): 27 The number of new cases amongst Work Permit holders residing outside dormitories has increased, from an average of 11 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 21 per day in the past week. Work Permit holders (residing in dormitories): 893 The main increase today continues to be for Work Permit holders residing in dormitories, in line with our continued efforts to actively test and isolate the infected workers. Most of these cases are young, have a mild illness and are being monitored in the community isolation facilities or general ward of our hospitals. None of them is in the intensive care unit. ** Note that the 3 figures listed above include both linked and unlinked cases. Known Clusters MOH has yet to release the figures for the most updated clusters for 18th April and has only announced the known clusters for the previous day's, where 517 previously unlinked cases were added to the clusters. An additional 3 new clusters were announced, namely Homestay Lodge,  CDPL Tuas Dormitory and TTJ Design & Engineering Pte Ltd. There are currently 72 known clusters (as of 17th April). With the rapid increase in daily Covid-19 cases, Singapore has moved up the list to rank as the 2nd most infected country in the world in terms of land mass (residential area). Click to view full list Health authorities in the island city announced a new daily high of 942 cases on Saturday (18th Apr), bringing the total number of infected Covid-19 cases to 5992 with 11 deaths. The land mass of the island city is about 277 sq miles (719 km²), roughly 4 times the size of Washington D.C. and 1/10 the size of Wuhan in China. The country's prime minister had, in a recent Facebook post “hope” that Singapore would be able to achieve by 17th April “positive results”, like what New Zealand has managed to do, which is to reduce the infection rate in the country. However, the daily figures since 17th April have been surging upwards, suggesting that the island city has yet to reach Covid-19's peak and the hope of "positive results" would continue to remain only an aspiration for months to come.          Read More →
