This is not a game of cardsThis is not a game of cards I can appreciate parties wanting to hold their cards close to their chest, but the smoke and mirrors games on nominations day, the shuffling of the DPM from a seat he had openly been declared to be defending, and other ministers shuffling constituencies leaves one feeling the PAP thinks it is playing a game of cards. Constituency...

2010-02-19  Read More →

More PAP MPs on Facebook to reach out to young Singaporeans

More PAP MPs on Facebook to reach out to young Singaporeans

Written by Our Correspondent According to a Straits Times report today, the PAP MPs are jumping onto the Facebook bandwagon to reach out to young Singaporeans. 41 of the 81 PAP MPs are on Facebook and they include Deputy Prime Ministers Wong Kan Seng and Teo Chee Hean, and Ministers George Yeo, Yaacob Ibrahim, Vivian Balakrishnan and Lim Hwee Hua. Embarrassed by the utter failure of YPAP to engage the online community, the state media has been tasked again to salvage the battered image of the PAP MPs in the eyes of young Singaporeans. The YPAP was embroiled in a controversy of late when its member Eric How made a police report over a non-existent impersonation on Facebook under the "advice" of its Chairman Teo Ser Luck which exposed his complete ignorance of the New Media. Though the PAP has set up an internet subcommittee way back in 2006 to win the hearts and minds of young Singaporeans, it has few results to show, if any. The P65 blog run by PAP MPs floundered due to lack of readership and is now handed over to be managed entirely by YPAP members with the same dismal results. Its Facebook has less members than a Facebook set up to vote out the YPAP only two months ago. None of its party websites have a readership large enough to establish a presence in cyberspace. Netizens should not be fooled by the latest lame attempt by the PAP to win their votes ahead of the next general election. As Foreign Minister George Yeo has demonstrated aptly, their Facebooks are nothing more but "wayang" to promote themselves and they will never dare to engage in serious discussion and debate on current affairs and national policies. SDP Secretary-General Dr Chee Soon Juan had invited George Yeo for a debate several times on his Facebook and was turned away. A young lady seeking help for a molest case was told by him curtly to see her MP instead. No matter how they tried, nothing will ever change so long the PAP retains its two-thirds majority in Parliament and continues to rule the country with an iron fist. The best way to "engage" the PAP is to vote them out in the next election and only then will they bother to listen to the genuine concerns and worries of Singaporeans.  Read More →

Pastor Rony Tan stood by his remarks against homosexuals

Pastor Rony Tan stood by his remarks against homosexuals

Written by Our Correspondent Lighthouse Evangelism Senior Pastor Rony Tan got himself into another controversy again barely a week after he was hauled up by the ISD over disparaging remarks he made about Buddhism and Taoism during a church session. This time, he had offended the homosexual community with remarks made during a video interview with an ex-lesbian Cheryl Bachelor which was removed from his website, but ripped by a blogger Kenneth Tan and circulated widely in cyberspace. The 80-minute long video revolved around the interview with Cheryl Bachelor which was used to highlight Pastor Tan’s views on homosexuality. According to Pastor Rony, homosexuals are not born “this way” and people end up “turning” gay either because of abuse or an absent parent when young. He felt it is necessary to “warn” people of the pitfalls of homosexuality: “If we don’t warn people against this, then there will be more and more homosexuals because many of these people will be harassing and seducing young boys, and they in turn will become homosexuals,” he exclaimed. He insinuated that homosexuals are not “normal” people because they do not procreate: “Proper sex means life — it propagates life. Lesbianism and homosexuality simply mean death and barrenness.” His remarks spark another massive outcry with some 85 people lodging police reports against him over the weekend. Two days after online portals Fridae and Temasek Review published the news, the Straits Times contacted Pastor Rony for an interview who stood his ground and defended his views vigorously. "I've said nothing wrong, you know. Like I said, my stand is with the average person and the Government. But, of course, you know there is a law against homosexual acts, so that's always been my stand," he said. He also claimed that his stand is consistent with that of the National Council of Churches of Singapore (NCCS): Homosexuality is wrong, but gay people should not be discriminated against. When asked whether a police report in such a case could lead to a criminal case being made against Pastor Tan, senior lawyer Subhas Anandan said it could. "There are sections of the Penal Code that make it an offence to attempt to provoke a breach of peace or incite a community to commit public mischief against another," he said. Netizens are divided over whether the police reports were warranted. While some castigated Pastor Rony for being "offensive", others defended his freedom of speech and felt the matter should be resolved via a dialogue between him and the homosexual community.  Read More →
