This is not a game of cardsThis is not a game of cards I can appreciate parties wanting to hold their cards close to their chest, but the smoke and mirrors games on nominations day, the shuffling of the DPM from a seat he had openly been declared to be defending, and other ministers shuffling constituencies leaves one feeling the PAP thinks it is playing a game of cards. Constituency...

Cwc-Ai

Temasek Review writes to SPH CEO Alan Chan to seek further clarifications

Temasek Review writes to SPH CEO Alan Chan to seek further clarifications

[Read our latest rebuttal to Mr Geoffrey Pereira's second article on 13 November 2009 here] Mr Alan Chan Chief Executive Officer Singapore Press Holdings Dear Mr Alan Chan, RE: ARTICLE BY STRAITS TIMES JOURNALIST MR GEOFFREY PEREIRA ON 6 NOVEMBER 2009 We refer to the article by Mr Geoffrey Pereira which was published on the Straits Times digital edition on 6 November 2009 at 11.40am titled "Attack on Temasek Review: Not SPH" (read article here) Mr Pereira claimed that Temasek Review had accused SPH of launching an internet attack on its site in an article published on 2 November 2009. We beg to differ. Nowhere in the article did we ever accuse SPH of attacking our site via a DDOS or otherwise. Our correspondent who drafted the article was not familiar with IT matters. We apologize if our article has caused some misunderstanding and we have already clarified the matter in subsequent articles. We have never intended to implicate SPH with the DDOS attack on our server which had occurred a day earlier and we are sorry for any distress caused. Please allow us to outline the sequence of events to give you a more complete picture of what had happened exactly. Our servers are hosted with RTG (Asia) Network in a China Data Centre. On 1 November 2009 at about 12.10am, our correspondent received a phone call from our system administrator informing him that our newly installed anti-DDOS firewall had detected a flurry of network communication requests coming from the same IP address - 203.116.232.234. A snapshot of our server log provided by our system administrator showed the IP address "grabbing" content from our site. The IP address was traced back to SPH by our data center. According to our system administrator, this is not ordinary browsing, but "grabbing". The manner by which contents are being accessed is consistent with search robots or a web grabber – i.e. a website is archived so that a string search can be made. Our correspondent was told by our system administrator that such "grabbing" can potentially hog our server's resources, but in this instance, it didn’t because the software firewall on the server itself banned the offending IP address minutes into the action after the IP address exceeded 60 connects per minute, the threshold set by the system administrator. Technically, if the server were to be not protected by firewall and had been configured poorly, a multiple of requests in excess of 60 connects per minute would have brought our server down. We were very concerned about the incident because our server was down for 8 hours during the previous day due to a DDOS attack which explained why we made the fateful decision to make it public in the hope that SPH can provide us with some answers since the IP address was traced back to it. In his article, Mr Pereira had admitted that SPH employees were found to be visiting TR during the time period when the “grabbing” incident was alleged to take place during the period from 10 pm (31 Oct) to 1am (1 Nov). His revelations corroborated with the findings on our server log which showed an IP address from SPH accessing/grabbing our content. We hope SPH is able to provide us information on the following: 1. The identity of the employee or bot who was “grabbing” content from TR during the stated time period. 2. Is he/she using a web grabber software to do so? 3. What are his/her motives for “grabbing” our site. We would like to appeal for your kind understanding and patience that we were quite traumatized by the earlier DDOS attack which disrupted accessibility to our site for almost an entire day and it was an unfortunate coincidence that an IP address from SPH was caught "grabbing" content from our site a day later. We just want to obtain an understanding of what happened exactly so that it will allay our anxieties and set our hearts at ease that such uninvited "grabbing" of content on our site from SPH will either not occur again or is a routine "operation" by SPH which will not have a detrimental impact on our server. Thank you very much for your time and attention and we hope to hear a favorable reply from you soon. EDITOR TEMASEK REVIEW Related articles: >> Debunking Mr Geoffrey’s claims in his misleading article: “Attack on Temasek Review: not SPH >> Attack on Temasek Review: not SPH >> SPH IP caught grabbing “content” from Temasek Review >> Debunking Mr Geoffrey’s claims on “IP spoofing”  Read More →

Letter from Singaporean to MM Lee protesting against rising number of PRCs in Singapore

Letter from Singaporean to MM Lee protesting against rising number of PRCs in Singapore

Republic of Singapore Attn: Mr Lee Kuan Yew Prime Minister's Office Istana Annexe, Orchard Road, Singapore 238823 Dear Mr. Lee, I applaud your son's recent comment on SMRT's crowded train and SMRT's diligent move to increase trains schedule. But it is still a pack during non peak hours. It would be a good opportunity for your son to come and ride on the public buses and MRTs again. Perhaps your son may learn a thing or two on public image, from Taiwan President Ma Ying Jeou by visiting neighbourhood retail shops, to witness another social isssue at hand. This time involving Chinese immigrants. I no longer think it is a fluke when Chinese people in the service sector serve with a bad attitude. I no longer think it is abnormal for Chinese people to be loud in public places. I no longer believe that I can live here with that for too long. I no longer think that it's funny when an entire section of my BMT platoon consists of Chinese students. I no longer hold much regard for this pink IC, because at the end of the day anyone can get it by serving NS. Don't get me wrong, I have no problems with Chinese people. I have a great Chinese buddy from BMT and I wish to visit his hometown some day. I recognise that Chinese who come over are contributing to the economy. To what limit is there on emphasis on economy and to what extent will the govt bring in these people to artificially boost the economy and the population? I cannot believe my eyes and my ears each day when I take the public transport everyday. To commoners like us, it is nothing like what you imagine we put up with. Lee Kuan Yew, this is not just your country. Single-handedly, you have upheaved Singapore culture by banning dialects on television media. But let's move on from there. 20 years on, when people are about to get settled, and Singapore is slowly beginning to form our own sense of identity and we're beginning to develop some feeling of our unique Singapore flavoured culture, you find the burning need to infuse hundreds of thousands of Chinese people, from an entirely different social conditioning and background, into Singapore society which was just beginning to take some shape. In National Service, I raised the issue of why young Singapore males don't have a sense of belonging and are unwilling to fight for their country, to the then Chief of Defence, LTG Desmond Quek. He could only ask me back with a blank, "Is that really happening?" I now know the answer to that question. The Uniquely Singapore campaign that the government has been promoting of late? You can flush that down the drain. I believe your grandson has just finished his national service, why don't you try asking what his peers think about this country now? Why not try conducting a poll among young people to have a feel what is on the ground? But of course, I don't expect you to do that. Anyway, it doesn't matter how we Singaporeans feel, lah. It's how the new Singaporeans feel that really matters. Anyway, Singapore no longer feels like my country. When people outside Singapore do ask, I will tell them it is a province in China. Yours faithfully, Teoh Tian Jing   EDITORS' NOTE: This letter was first published in Sammyboy Forum on 6 November 2009  Read More →

SPH: An insider speaks

SPH: An insider speaks

I had no illusions about the independence of the local media when I first started my job  in StraitsTimes, under SPH. I knew that my work would be edited, and possibly censored for political safety, and I was mostly fine with that - no media channel anywhere in the world is entirely free from some form of editorial trimming, after all. But there is such a thing as a free press but certainly not one in Singapore. What I didn't bargain for was individual self-censorship, unspoken policies and rules, and the stoutness with which people swallowed their journalistic dignity and integrity (because it does exist, even strongly, in some places) to toe the company line. Incredible as it seems, reporters in Singapore do have the same fierce pride in their work as reporters anywhere else; only pitifully and sadly they cannot demonstrate their beliefs. After all its a job.The omnipotence of the CPF. Its on the cards that there will be a general election in 2010. It's hard for me to swallow the indignation I feel whenever I see the local media doggedly ignoring its news sense. We have seen it all before. We will see it again. And again. We see it every day. Articles and TV programmes are edited to balance out pro-opposition views; awesome camera opportunities - like the opposition rallies - are studiously left out of media coverage; banal and unfair quotes and tactics are highlighted and headlined simply because they are tools of the ruling party and the lap-dog media will comply.  But the truth will out. The voting public are not as blind as they seem. For those that WILL get the chance to vote, that is. There are many things journalists see that the eyes of the public are not privy to, and that we would like to report on but can't. Please remember that when you read an article or watch a broadcast that seems particularly, emetically subjective. And help spread the word that a lot of us in the media are sorry that we can't do the job we want to. It may not mean a lot to you, but it sucks for us that for every day, people's opinions of us plummet - despite the fact that we work our asses off in 14-hour days with no breaks on weekends or public holidays to bring you OUR (or it THEIR) version of the news. We are just doing a job..for THEM. And for those who think it's as easy as quitting your jobs and following your conscience - grow up. This is a job. It puts food on our tables. We can all get up and leave, but it's ridiculously easy to replace us with more party-line-spouting drones. And it's also likely that we're doing something about it, in our own little ways, even if it's as small as writing about and expressing our dissatisfaction with the system from the inside. But we cant tell you about it. After all, walls have ears inside here too. And some of those ears are positioned to hear everything, sometimes for some who want to just get on with company at the expense of dobbing their own friends. But that is another sad story. Clearly the pressure coming from the head is overwhelming, and it is no surprise whatsoever that that pressure should translate down the chain, so that the executives chastise the editors, the editors chastise the journalists, and so on, if anyone steps out of line, and that perpetuates self-censorship because 'you might as well mutilate your own article before they get to it, and in any case there's no point in drawing attention to yourself'. Will it make some people squirm after reading this. Doubt it. There is no soul. EDITOR's NOTE:  This article is contributed by a reader with the moniker helplessinsingapore, copied verbatim.
