Today's commentary makes for an interesting discussion and I encourage fellow netizens to share their thoughts and experiences. I thank you all. Despite harsher punishments, according to the Traffic Police, drink driving violations and those that caused death and injury have all gone up over the past 3 years. I ask why despite the enhanced punishments and better education, drink driving still persist with a rising trajectory? Do our existing laws have inadequate teeth or our education has failed or both? The answer is obvious. I do not want anybody's son, daughter or mother etc to be maimed or killed by a drink driver, not my own or my neighbour's or any minister's or any fellow netizen's etc. Ask yourself if you were in charge, what would you do better than the pap government? To further tighten the laws isn't difficult at all because the pap government enjoys an absolute majority in Parliament, so, not doing it, I suspect is due to a lack of political will and/or concern about the political cost. If I were in charge, for a start, I will step up public education especially at places such as drinking holes and coffee-shops where large numbers of drinkers congregate. Next, I will ensure that all learner drivers are sufficiently imbued and tested on the danger, irresponsibility and the potential consequences of drink driving. I will make it a mandatory 3 strokes caning even for the first time offenders and graduated to 5 strokes for repeat offenders and for female offenders or those aged 55 or above to serve an extra 3 months prison sentence in lieu. Thirdly, offender's vehicle will be compulsorily confiscated and all current punishments to be reviewed with the intention of further enhancement. All foreigners who are found guilty of drink driving will be permanently deported from Singapore after serving their sentences never mind if that person is a worker or a millionaire. I believe that if there is a will, there is a way unless the pap government further wayang suckerporeans. In conclusion, I repeat that I do not want anybody's son, daughter or mother etc to be needlessly maimed or killed by an irresponsible drink driver, not me or my neighbour's or my colleague's or any minister's or any fellow netizen's.
