They say every school is a good school, ministers send their children to elite schools. They say NTU and NUS amongst best universities in the world, they preferred to hire from Malaysia, South Asia, China, Vietnam, Myanmar, etc. They say Singapore is best place for retirement, you continue to see higher and higher suicide rates. They say BTOs are affordable, they continue to raise prices, affordability means paying 25-30 years loan. They say foreigners create jobs for Singaporeans, Singaporeans end up in PHV, food delivery and unemployed. They say Singaporeans must tighten belt and remain vigilant about asking for more pay, they reward themselves with highest political salary in the world. They say leave no one behind, you find more and more elderly working as cleaners at airport, coffee shops and hawkers. Am I surprised that our suicide numbers climbed to 452 cases last year, the highest in nearly a decade? The answer is No. People do not eat full nothing to do then go and commit suicide for fun. Not the young, the not so young or the old. Instead, something is wrong, seriously wrong with our country and our society under this pap government. It will be extreme cowardice, irresponsible and in total self-denial for anyone to push this sorry state to C19 lalala... There are many reasons for people to take their own lives and they include illness, extreme loneliness, extreme hopelessness and financial desperation etc. I do accept that C19 did make their situations worse. Despite the many big and small voluntary organisations, religious organisations and welfare organisations etc each doing their part in reaching out and helping those down and out persons in our society and I applaud them for their efforts, I ask what exactly and tangible is the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) doing as far as our soaring suicide numbers are concerned? What are those superbly well-fed pap mayors doing too? I am unsure if those MSF ministars and pap mayors are too busy at home counting their fat salaries. At the end of the day, their performance must be measured by results. I repeat, their performance must be measured by results! Performance cannot be measured by their big official titles or their salaries or worse still, by wayang wayang here and there. Pap ministars and pap mayors must never forget that and the vast majority of our not so astute and street-smart citizens badly need to understand that too. I have never expected zero suicide, however, a soaring suicide trend cannot be tolerated especially when pap ministers know how to pay themselves millions in salaries and the majority of pap mayors earn very fat salaries and allowances from our people for doing only part-time community work. One suicide committed that otherwise could have been saved if only we have more capable people in charge is one too many! Many people in Singapore have the impression that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is oppressive and is hated by the people. I read a report from a survey conducted by Harvard University that China has the highest score on the question of trust in government. 82% of the respondents, who are the ordinary people of China, trusted their government, which is run by the CCP. The survey results are shown here. On the same survey, only 42% of the respondents in America trusted their government. Why do the people of China give a high score in trusting their government? As the survey was carried out by a reputable American university, I believe that respondents were not voting out of fear. I want to share a story which may explain the high level of trust. During the covid-19 crisis in Wuhan, over 2,000 doctors and nurses came from all the provinces of China to Wuhan to help the local doctors and nurses to cope with the pandemic. I saw the video coverage of these volunteers flying into Wuhan. I was moved by the high level of patriotism. Later, I learned from another source that most of the volunteers were members of the CCP. They responded to a call by the CCP to help in Wuhan. They volunteered out of a sense to serve the people, which was what they pledged to do. The CCP has 90 million members, representing about 7% of the population of China.  It was possible to find sufficient doctors and nurses to work in Wuhan. To be accepted into the CCP, the member has to pledge loyalty to the party, to the constitution of China and to serve the people of China.  They also have to attend study sessions to learn about political and governance issues. This dedication from the doctors and nurses, who were members of CCP, must have touched the people at large. This was a clear demonstration about how the CCP served the people. I am sure that the CCP members must be active in other areas, such as the effort to improve the living standard of the people living in the poor regions of China. Indeed, I also watched a video showing  one such person. He worked an entire career in the proverty alleviation program, even though he was paid a modest remuneration. He had to spend a large part of his time away from his family who lived in Beijing. It is possible that these stories are the propaganda of the CCP. My common sense tells me that they are likely to be true. That is probably the reason for the high support and regard of the people to the CCP. Of course, this still leaves 18% of the people who do not like the CCP for various reasons. I like to ask the people in Singapore who hold a negative view about the CCP to learn more about the actual situation in China. Maybe, they will change their view.   Tan Kin Lian        Read More →
